Whereas Friday’s races at the European Junior Open Water Championships featured the youngest competitors (14- and 15-year-old boys and girls contested the 5k, while 16- and 17-year-old boys and girls competed in the 7.5k), Saturday marked the entry of the 18- and 19-year-olds into the competition.
In the boys’ 10k race, which was set off first, the top ten finishers came through the chute in three waves. Hungary’s Kristóf Rasovszky, who represented his country in the 1500 in Rio this summer, won in 1:55:40.7. Rasovszky also won the 10k at the 2016 European Open Water Championships in June. Today’s runner-up was Germany’s Florian Wellbrock, who also competed in the 1500 at the 2016 Olympic Games. He finished right behind Rasovszky in 1:55:50.7.
Andrea Manzi of Italy led the second wave of finishers, and picked up the bronze medal with his 1:57:46.6 touch. Behind him were Matan Roditi of Israel (1:57:46.7), Kirill Belyaev of Russia (1:57:47.2), Aleksandr Astapov of Russia (1:57:52.4), and Duje Milan of Croatia (1:5756.4).
The other others to finish in under 2 hours were Pasquale Sanzullo of Italy (1:58:31.1), Lars Bottelier of Netherlands (1:58:38.6), and Raul Santiago of Spain (1:58:51.3).

The girls’ 10k was dominated by Alisia Tettamanzi of Italy, who finished all alone in 2:08:54.1. Leading the fight for the second position was Russia’s Valeriia Ermakova, who touched out Italy’s Rebecca Talanti by 7 hundredths, 2:12:01.5 to 2:12:08.5
Following close behind in that pack were Hungary’s Adel Farkas (2:12:10.6) and Katalin Onon Somenek (2:12:12.5), Greta Gavazzoni of Italy (2:12:54.3), Janina Beckers of Netherlands (2:12:54.7), Russia’s Mariia Smoliakova (2:13:06.6, Spain’s Judith Navarro (2:13:06.8), and Rotem Meirov of Israel (2:13:10.2).
