Guilherme Guido set a new South American record (and a new Brazilian record) in the 100 backstroke at the 2015 Brazil Open finals tonight, speeding up his FINA ‘A’ qualifying swim from this morning by dropping over three-tenths from 53.41 to 53.09. The previous record was also held by Guido, a 53.12 relay lead-off from this summer’s Pan Am Games. He is now the fourth-fastest 100 backstroker in the world this season, bumping Japan’sRyosuke Irie down to fifth.\

Guido pushed well ahead of the field from his first breakout off the start. He split a 25.9 at the wall and never looked back.
Guido’s FINA ‘A’ cut means that he will most likely be able to represent Brazil at his home Olympics in Rio next year. The 2015 Brazil Open is one of two meets where Brazilian swimmers can qualify for their Olympic team. Unless two more swimmers hit ‘A’ cuts at the Maria Lenk Trophy in April and swim faster than Guido’s time, he is a shoe-in for the team. Following Guido but just missing the ‘A’ cut were Daniel Orzechowski (54.59) and Henrique Machado (54.90).
It took a 3:30:50 to medal at Kazan.
I think medal at Rio will be 3:30 low.. so it is possible for brazil to go 3:30 or 3:29 high.. but everybody must deliver.
USA is far ahead, but after them Australia, GBR, JPN, FRA, RUS and now BRA can fight for the last 2 medals..
Henrique has some room to improve, awful start, he was half a body behind at the 50 mark.. just on that he can get 0,4 0,5 improve to become a 51 mid flyer.
The best flat start times from 2015. Put it together and it’s a 3:33.12.

It’s worth noting that all of these guys are getting faster. They’ve got solid individual and relay swims, and they’re consistent.
If Guido can dip under 53, Silva put down a decent breast split, Mendez break into the 51s, and Chierighini finally show what he’s capable of…. then these guys could be serious medal contenders. There’s no reason they can’t get under 3:30 with this talent. And they’d be doing it in their own back yard.

today Henrique Martins made 52.14 and Marcos Macedo 52.17 in 100fly.I think at least one of them will be under 52 next year.
