According to Princeton, New Jersey police, Princeton swim team captain Samuel Smiddy was arrested on Saturday morning and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
Smiddy allegedly carried a shotgun at the Cloister Inn eating club, a private undergraduate institution where many Princeton upperclassman (especially the university’s athletes) eat their meals. He was arrested at 10:40 am on Saturday on a tip off from a concerned citizen at 9:30 am.
The Cloister Inn eating club is located just off the Princeton campus.
According to NJ.com, the police department investigation found that Smiddy carried the shotgun at the club without meeting the necessary legal requirements. They also found that he never brought the weapon onto the Princeton University campus.
The police confiscated the shotgun, and Smiddy was released with a pending court date soon after his arrest.
Princeton police spokesman Lt. John Bucchere “would not elaborate on how exactly police learned of the shotgun,” according to NJ.com.
SwimSwam has reached out to both Princeton University and Smiddy; Princeton declined to comment, saying that “the University does not comment on cases involving individual students.” Smiddy did not respond.
Smiddy is a senior originally from Florida.
very right wing family
Withholding my opinion, since there is little information on the incident
Is Clara Smiddy from MI his sister???
suggest respect a young man’s privacy. this is not a story about swimming.
A shotgun?! That’s a bad decision.
How’s that? People are allowed to hunt and skeet shoot. Sounds to me like he had it in his vehicle and some nosy Nelly saw it and called the cops
No one should be driving around with a gun in the car for any reason.
New Jersey does not recognise other states gun licences so can be quite a common offense in NJ .
not good
i hope he’s ok #pray4smiddy
I doubt he was even aware of gun laws in New Jersey… No one knows what he was doing with the gun…Probably due to depression caused by excessive stress…he was responsible for many things and is known for being a really great kid.
