Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, son of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, knows the sport of swimming.

Recent images of Prince William come to mind as a proud supporter of his British swim stars at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, but Prince William logged his time in the pool at St Andrew’s University in Scotland on the water polo team. He was, in fact, captain of the team.

Prince William issued the public announcement above as a supporter of the Amateur Swimming Association’s vision that every child has the right to learn to swim.

Prince William, a parton of the English Schools Swimming Association, was alarmed to learn that half of 7-11 year olds in England, nearly 1.1. million kids, could not swim the length of a pool.

In the United States drowning  statistics have been national news for several years, thanks largely to the USA Swimming Foundation’s efforts to inform and educate.

USA DROWNING STATS:

  • 70% of African American children cannot swim
  • 60% of Latino children cannot swim
  • 40% of Caucasian children cannot swim
  • Ten people drown each day in the U.S
  • Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of childhood accidental death for children under the age of 14

In the United States you can do your part to help more children learn the life saving skill of swimming. Go here for more details.
