Practice + Pancakes: Olympians Finke, Smith lead Florida Taper for SEC Champs

We took a drive down to Gainesville to see what the Florida Gators were up to just a couple weeks out from the SEC Championships. We got to see the likes of Olympic medalists Kieran Smith (bronze, 400m free) and Bobby Finke (Gold, 800m & 1500m free) as well as post-grad Natalie Hinds (Silver, 4x100m free relay) in action as they began with some light speed work and then shifted to LCM freestyle work.

As observed in the video, they begin practice with

4x

25 to the feet @ 90% effort, hop out to other pool

25 skull, put hands on wall

at whistle, flip to fast breakout

After a bit more warmup, a large group including Finke, Smith, and Hinds went to the outdoor LCM pool to get some longer aerobic swims (400s) in with alternating equipment, including opposite fins and paddles as well as anti paddles (they make it feel like your swimming with a fist). This was coupled with 50s on a relatively easy interval that were around threshold (the coaches let the athletes choose the exact speed since it’s taper time).

Once upon a time, Coleman used to include a note about what they were actually doing in the water during practice and pancakes. Don’t know if coaches have pushed back against including that or he phased it out on his own.

I love that those are still a thing. My club coach was having us use them back in 2001. Anti-paddle is such an on brand name for them. I loved how they made my hands feel like they were size 4 Strokemaker paddles after I took them off.

Disturbed by the glaring lack of pancakes in this Practice + Pancakes

Yes, not even attempting. But probably they’re is no edible food in all of Gainesville, just some slim Jim’s and half a clementine

Instead of pancakes, Coleman should get something unique to each region. Would love to see him slurp down some fried gator.

You know someone would be in the comments (or my email inbox) about how eating Gators shows obvious anti-Florida bias by SwimSwam, because we don’t eat Bulldogs or Tigers or Crimson Tide.

Tell me you’ve never been to Gainesville without telling me you’ve never been to Gainesville.

Ever heard of a joke? What isn’t a joke is that Gainesville is a mid college town in a swamp.
