Mercer Island sophomore Piper Enge had a phenomenal showing at the girls’ WIAA 3A state championships, shattering both the state and meet records en route to victory in the 100 breaststroke, while also winning the 200 IM in a meet record.

In the 100 breast, Enge split 28.37/32.07 to dominate the field and win the race by two seconds.

Enge clocked a time of 1:00.44, breaking the State Record of 1:01.33 set by Carolyn McCann in 2013 and the seven-year-old meet record of 1:01.80 previously held by Kim Williams.

In addition to the 100 breaststroke state record, Enge also established a new meet record in the 200 IM, clocking 1:59.92 to erase Williams’ previous mark of 2:00.35. Enge topped the field by over five seconds.

In the race for the team title, Bainbridge Island cruised to the victory with 379 points, well ahead of runner-up Lakeside (220).

BainBridge Island’s 200 medley relay team won the first event of the day in record fashion, soaring to a time of 1:43.52 to lower the state record of 1:44.00, set by Skyline 2018.

The team was comprised of freshman backstroker Tierney Lenahan (25.96), junior Emma Solseng (29.90), senior Margaret Hayes (24.11), and freshman Alexa McDevitt (23.55).

The 200 freestyle was dominated by a pair of freshmen: Mia Foster of Garfield and Bainbridge Island’s McDevitt.

Foster would win the event in a final time of 1:49.54, dropping .03 from her preliminary swim, to claim the win by nearly a second over McDevitt, who had just finished up swimming the anchor leg on that record-setting relay.

The 50 free was also dominated by underclassmen, with the top two times coming from a pair of sophomores. Mary Clarke of Snohomish took the win in a time of 23.51, coming in just under the All-American Consideration time of 23.54.

It was a very close race for the silver between Claudia Yovanovich, Emma Solseng, and Margaret Hayes separated by a tenth of a second. Yovanovich emerged as the runner-up in 23.80.

Junior Brooke Andrews won the 1-meter diving event with a final score of 406.65, the only diver to break 400 points.

Freshman Ella Jablonski continued the dominance for the underclassmen, winning the 100 butterfly in a time of 53.77 over junior May Peterson, who finished in a time of 54.90. Jablonski’s swim got her under the All-American auto standard of 54.42.

Tierney Lenahan won the closest race of the day over sophomore Mary Clarke in the 100 freestyle, winning the event in a time of 51.15 to Clarkes 51.19.

In the 500, it was another close race and another win for the underclassmen. Foster took an early lead over senior Erika Carlson through the first 150 of the race, but Carlson was able to make up the difference and match Foster at the 200 as both turned in 1:55.58.

Foster pulled away on the last 50 with a 28.31 split to win the event by just over a second in 4:53.71.

The 200 free relay was won by Bainbridge Island, who clocked 1:35.98, buoyed by a pair of 23.6 splits from Kathryn Houseman (23.63) and Hayes (23.64).

Having opened up a 130-point lead in the standings, Bainbridge had all but solidified its State Championship title with only three events remaining.

Cheney’s May Peterson won the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.60, leading from start to finish en route to getting two tenths under the All-American auto standard (54.80). This was the first win for upperclassmen on the day.

Heading into the last event, Bainbridge had extended its lead to 141 points, securing their State Championship Title.

Locking up the Championship title did not stop Bainbridge from putting their best foot forward in the final event.

Bainbridge would go on to sweep the relays, winning the final event of the day by fielding an all freshman relay. The school would win by over two seconds and finish in an All-American Consideration time of 3:30.08.

With this relay win, Bainbridge extended their lead to 159 points over Lakeside School who would finish second in the meet.
