Pieter Coetze Breaks Own African Record With 52.58 100 Backstroke

Pieter Coetze of South Africa broke his own African Record in the men’s 100 backstroke during Monday’s final, swimming to a 52.58. That broke his previous record of a 52.63 that he swam last night during semifinals.

Coetze entered the meet with the African Record as his best time was a 52.78.

Coetze was narrowly faster tonight on both 50s than he was last night, but every hundredth makes a difference at this level.

Coetze also became the highest finisher in South African history in the event. His 5th place finish was higher than the previous best finish in the men’s 100 back for the country as Jackie Wild was 6th in the event way back in 1948.
