The GOAT and the man who beat him both appeared on the same stage, as 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps and Singaporean 100m fly champion from Rio Joseph Schooling took part in a global event last week. Both Phelps and Schooling were special guest speakers at the ‘What’s Next in Global Sports’ event in Singapore May 16th and 17th at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Center.
Per the event’s site, ‘What’s Next in Global Sports’ brings together thought leaders from around the globe for dynamic discussions on the key technology, media and marketing trends shaping the future of the sports industry. Given the vast untapped opportunity in global sports that is in Asia, the event will spotlight what is driving the rise of Asia on the global sporting stage, and deliver expert advice on unlocking opportunities for your business.’
The event wrapped up with the ONE: Enter the Dragon, with the premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event highlighted by the World Title bout between 4-time ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya Aoki and six-time Pankration World Champion Christian Lee.
As for Schooling, his Instagram post below reads, “Eight weeks out to the World Championships and managed to get some time with @m_phelps00 . Always fun to catch up with the 🐐.
In an interview appearing in The Straits Times during the GOAT’s visit, Phelps said of Schooling’s chances for gold in Tokyo, “As long as Jo prepares himself as best as he can, he is going to be fine. He’s talented enough, he’s got enough speed, he’s got a great kick, he’s a great competitor.”
Dressel will also be 48 high 49 low 100 fly. He’s so good
Phelps looking in good shape .
Won’t happen, but with a full year of training and swimming only the 200 Im, a 1.55 low could be more than plausible.
I don’t know if the 200 Im in Tokyo will be won with a faster time..
If he ever came back it’d be for 200 IM and 200 free relay leg. He’s not tho 🙁
His most impressive relay legs at the last two Olympics have been in the 4 X 100 free relay.
I imagine the benefit he would get from 2 more Olympic golds would be very low given amount of work. What’s two more medals when you have 28 or whatever absurd number he has.
One thing for sure though, dude can rock the no socks look
I think he won’t come back because of how fast were his events on Budapest. He knows he doesn’t have a 49 100 fly or a 1:52 fly on him.
I’m a huge fan but he’s a proud guy and won’t come back no not making the team
If Kalisz is doing 1:56 200 flys (he was the guy who didn’t get 5000 comments about his 200 fly this past weekend) right now unshaved and with his training load (best is 1:54.8), he’s going to be faster than 1:55 in the 200 IM (best 1:55.4) come Tokyo.
It’s only a 1:56 200 fly. Why are you getting so hyped about it?
Because it was the same time as Dressel, and I heard that was an incredible swim in his 10th best event (if you’re counting 25’s as events).
But it’s not even a #8 time in The world like Cody Millers 100 breast! Number freakin 8 man!
Again, wake me up when he ends a season with a world’s #1 time again.
except outside of the IM’s the 200 fly is Chase’s best event. Caeleb primarily swims 100’s. I also think it was insane because of his 28.8 final 50. The overall time is fine among elite 200 flyers, but that last 50 IS insane
Yes that is, but try the same after two 29 low.
Exactly. He did it off a 31.0 third 50. Hell, Flickinger was 33 on her 3rd 50.
Troy has always said that fly was Dressel’s best stroke. So he does a middling time, rested, in his best stroke.
“He’ll be fine” is a safe statement. Phelps knows Dressel is around.
The reason he won in Rio was that he just did the one event so if the other guys load up on heavy schedules he can sneak in again and medal if he hits his taper just right.
And in that only event of himself the other three guys stole the show.
Well he did swim his way to a last place finish in the semifinals of the 100 free.
I think the only one under 51 will be Dressel. I don’t see Schooling regaining 2016 form
it’ll be way more people under 51 than you think. i’m thinking like 4-5
agreed – there are lots of guys who have been 51+ this year so far ….
But only one guy going 49.5 . . .
He is the only one for sure going 50 low or better. Everyone else just has a chance to break to 51. I would bet on Chad and Milak as the other medal favorites.
Plus Metella and perhaps Minakov. Codia found something last year, Sabo (Szabo) is good this year, defeated Cseh and Milak at Nationals In Debrecen and swam a National Record in 50 metres. I don’t know too much about Kusch, sorry for that.
I think Milak won’t be a medal contender here, he’ll win the 200 and I hope with new ER.
For now Milak’s 50 mid seems a one time thing. Especially with his focus now 2fly and events like 400 free. But who knows, he could change back to 100/200 fly for Tokyo. If he focuses on sprinting more he could go back under 51
I hope so. That time 100 fly was the only goal (wasn’t selected in 200) and he did what he could. But 200 is his main goal as we can see.
Crazy things happen in Olympic years. I mean Seth frickin Stubblefield went 51.24 at ’16 OTs when his prior best was 52.4. There will be guys dropping out of nowhere.
Minakov will definitely take a medal
I’m not so sure.
Fine to make the final if he prepares correctly.
*Caeleb enters the chat*
I don’t think anybody will be faster than Dressel.
U are so right – specially how he is swimming now ( as we saw last week-end ) ….
The frees won’t be so easy 😉
Word.
Dressel will be 46 low in Tokyo. He’s got gold easily
Let’s look at the Worlds first.
Double word.
Caeleb be like: hey Mike u forgot that I almost broke ur WR in textile?
I’m sure when Phelps is trying to sell suits in Gainesville he’ll be all about CD lol.
