Phelps, Ledecky, & Sjostrom Nominated For USSA Athlete of the Month

Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and Sarah Sjostrom are in the running to be crowned the United States Sports Academy’s Athletes of the Month after big swims at the 2015 FINA World Championships and the US National Championships.

Phelps was nominated along with Usain Bolt (Track & Field, JAM), Mike Fiers (Baseball, USA), Mo Farah (Runner, GBR), Ashton Eaton (Track & Field, USA), and Jason Day (Gold, AUS).

Although he was not at the FINA World Championships due to the terms of his suspension from USA Swimming, he did post three world’s best times in San Antonio in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, and the 200 IM. Although he was not crowned World Champion, he was faster than the World Champion in each event.

On the women’s side, Ledecky and Sjostrom were nominated along with 

Katie Ledecky dominated the freestyle events at the FINA World Championships, winning everything from the 200 to the 1500 along with breaking multiple World Records.

Sarah Sjostrom also broke few world records in Kazan. She lowered Dana Vollmer’s World Record in the 100 butterfly with her time of 55.64, becoming the second women in history to break 56 seconds in the event.

Eaton for the male award and Ledecky for the female

Ledecky would be the top choice out of the swimmers, but I’d go with Ashton Eaton.

Sarah Sjostrom’s finals time was 55.64 not 55.74.
