Lima, Peru is slated to host the 2019 Pan American Games, but right now its population is battling an imminent danger in the form of catastrophic flooding. Since the beginning of 2017, 72 people have died within Peru due to intense rains, overflowing rivers and mudslides, the likes of which the nation hasn’t seen in over 20 years. With conditions expected to continue for another 2 weeks, the disaster has already affected more than half a million Peruvians. (ABC News)
Within his Facebook post published last week, Mayor of Lima’s San Isidro district, Manuel Velarde, is calling for the Peru to forego hosting duties and instead direct the money to relief efforts. He stated, “There are families without a roof to sleep under; our country is in emergency.” He continued, “We must prioritize the spending to help the victims; we propose the suspension of the Pan American Games scheduled for 2019 in order that the budget get allocated to complete the rehabilitation of all affected areas.” (Google Translate)
According to Inside the Games, the Popular Force political party, which controls Peru’s Congress, have said they will issue a petition on the issue within a fortnight’.
We previously reported that Peru had to have a payment date extended from November to December 31st of 2016. The installment, said to be to the tune of $3.3 million (£2.5 million/€3 million), owed as payments for rights fees, was originally due in 2014.
