Penny Oleksiak broke the Canadian national record in the 100m freestyle for the third time at these championships as she stretched into the wall in third to take home the bronze medal.
Oleksiak’s time of 52.01 was faster than both the 52.36 that she swam in the heats to originally break the record, and the 52.19 time she swam in semifinals to break it for the second time. Collectively she’s taken off 0.40 from the previous 52.41 record held by Sandrine Mainville.
At the turn, Oleksiak was second behind Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands out in 25.11 compared to Kromowidjojo’s 25.01. On the second 50, Brittany Elmslie of Australia pushed her way into the mix, charging on the two early leaders.
Elmslie passed Sandrine Mainville of Canada to get right in the mix with Oleksiak and Kromowidjojo. They turned together on the final 25 as Elmslie began to charge, surging to a lead.
At the touch, Elmslie won in 51.81, Kromowidjojo was second in 51.92, Oleksiak third in 52.01.
