Penn Nabs 5-time MIAA Champion Alan Cherches for 2022-23

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Alan Cherches, who hails from Owings Mills, Maryland and attends the McDonogh School, has announced his verbal commitment to the application process* at the University of Pennsylvania. He will join the class of 2026 with Alex Fu.

“I am extremely excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to the application process at the University of Pennsylvania and the opportunity to study at its world-renowned Wharton School! I want to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and friends who have supported me along this journey. GO QUAKERS!!”

The high school junior is a five-time Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (independent schools) champion. In 2020 as a sophomore, he won the 50 free in 21.44 and placed 4th in the 100 free (46.97) and he anchored both the 200 free relay (21.40) and 200 medley relay (20.79), the latter of which set a MIAA state record.

Cherches does his club swimming with Eagle Swim Team. In March, he blew away his old times in the SCY 50/200 free, 50/100 breast, and 200 IM and the LCM 50/100/200 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM at the ISCA International Senior Meet. He was a top-8 finisher in the 200 free, 50/100 breast, and 200 IM. The next month he lowered his PB in the SCY 100 breast at the GTSA TYR Championship Meet.

He has broken 30 Maryland state records in LSC and summer league racing, combined, and was named Maryland Swimmer of the Year nine times.

Best SCY times:

  • 50 Free – 20.96
  • 100 Free – 46.34
  • 200 Free – 1:41.94
  • 100 Breast – 56.03
  • 100 Back – 50.92
  • 100 Fly – 50.58
  • 200 IM – 1:52.49
  • 400 IM – 4:05.60

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].
