Italy’s long course national championship meet wrapped up with a two-session, short course set of time trials, allowing some of the nation’s top talent to challenge the record books in the 25-meter tub.

Federica Pellegrini broke her own national record in the 100 free to highlight the meet, going 52.17.

That time for Pellegrini topped her 52.56 that had stood as the national record since last December’s Short Course European Championships.

Pellegrini also won the 200 free in the morning session, going 1:53.07.

The Italian Federation’s press release lists the men’s 4×100 medley relay as a national record, though Italy’s team at the 2014 Short Course Worlds was actually faster. The team of Matteo Milli, Edoardo Giorgetti, Piero Codia and Filippo Magnini combined to go 3:28.29. Milli was 52.42 on backstroke, Giorgetti 58.81 on breast, Codia 49.82 on fly and Magnini 47.24 on freestyle.

The 2014 Italy team of Niccolo Bonacchi, Andrea Toniato, Matteo Rivolta and Luca Dotto were 3:27.05, but the federation lists the record at 3:28.29 from 2009.

A few other notable swims:

  • Matteo Rivolta won the 100 fly in 49.84, just three tenths off the national record he set last year.
  • Martina Carraro won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.71 – that rattled Lisa Fissneider’s national record of 1:05.28.
  • In the women’s 50 free, Silvia di Pietro was just two tenths off her own national record, going 24.24.
  • Ilaria Bianchi went 56.80 to win the women’s 100 fly, missing her national record by seven tenths.
  • Another national record-holder almost bettered his own mark in the men’s 100 back: Simone Sabbioni was 50.90, just under a half-second off his mark.

It’s good to see that Fede is firing on all cylinders in an Olympic year. She will go down as one of the Greats.
