Paralympics Day 7 Prelims Recap

Paralympics Day 7 consisted of 10 events. A total of four Paralympic records were broken along with one world record. Paralympic records were set in the Men’s SB14 100M Breaststroke, the Women’s SB14 100M Breaststroke, Men’s S13 50M Freestyle, and Men’s SB2 50M Breaststroke. A world record was set in the Men’s SB2 50M Breaststroke by Wenpan Huang of China.

So far, China has won 11 Gold medals in Paralympic swimming. 4 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze make up the Chinese medal count. They will have more chances to win medals in tonight’s final session with a total of 5 swimmers competing. In the Men’s SB2 50M Backstroke, Chinese swimmers fill the top three seeds for the final’s heat, giving them a chance to sweep the event.

Great Britain’s Scott Quinn claimed a Paralympic record during today’s prelims. So far, Great Britain has won 19 medals as of Day 6 finals with a total of 4 Gold, 6 Silver and 9 Bronze. Great Britain has a total of 7 swimmers that will compete in tonight’s finals.

Women’s SB8 100M Breaststroke

Canada’s Katerina Roxon will be seeded first going into tonight’s finals session. Roxon swam a time of 1:21.27. Following her are Ireland’s Ellen Keane with a time of 1:23.64 and Poland’s Paulina Wozniak with a time of 1:25.21.

Men’s S7 400M Freestyle

Great Britain will send two swimmers to finals of this event. Jonathon Fox qualified for the top seed with a time of 4:51.10. His teammate, Michael Jones also qualified and will be seeded third with a prelims time of 4:58.50.

Men’s SB14 100M Breaststroke

Great Britain will have two swimmers competing in this event. Scott Quinn set a new Paralympic record and qualified for the top seed with a time of 1:06.65–only about .3 seconds away from the current world record. Current world record holder Aaron Moores came in right behind Quinn with a time of 1:07.25.

Women’s SB14 100M Breaststroke

Michelle Alonso Morales of Spain set a new Paralympic record with a time of 1:13.05. She will be seeded first in tonight’s final heat. Following her are the Netherlands’ Magda Toeters with a time of 1:17.83 and Great Britain’s Bethany Firth with a time of 1:18.19.

Men’s S12 100M Backstroke

The finals heat of this event may be a very tight race. Ramen Salei of Azerbaijan qualified for the top seed with a time of 1:01.58. Following him closely were USA’s Tucker Dupree with a time of 1:01.61 and Ukraine’s Sergi Klippert with a time of 1:01.72.

Men’s SB2 50M Breaststroke

China will take the top three seeds in tonight’s finals. Wenpan Huang lead the way with his prelims time of 52.48 setting new Paralympics and world records. His teammates Tingshen Li and Chaowen Huang also qualified with times of 55.16 and 55.74, respectively.

Men’s SB3 50M Breaststroke

China’s Zhipeng Jin qualified for the top seed with a time of 49.52. Following him are Japan’s Takayuki Suzuki with a time of 49.71 and Spain’s Miguel Luque with a time of 49.79.

Women’s SB3 50M Breaststroke

China continued to send swimmers to finals when Jaio Cheng finished first in prelims with a time of 59.87. Following her are Ukraine’s Olga Sviderska with a time of 1:01.31 and Mexico’s Patricia Valle with a time of 1:01.34.

Men’s S13 50M Freestyle

Ihar Boki set another Paralympic record with a time of 23.73, about .5 seconds off of his current world record time of 23.20. Following him into finals are Brazil’s Carlos Farrenburg with a time of 24.41 and Uzbekistan’s Muzaffar Tursunkhujaev with a time of 24.48.

Women’s S13 50M Freestyle

Uzbekistan will send three swimmers to finals in this event. Shokhsanamkhon Toshpulatova qualified with a time of 28.21. Her teammates Muslima Odilova and Fotimakhon Amilova also qualified with times of 28.21 and 28.67, respectively.

 

Finals will begin tonight at 4:30 PM Eastern time
