PAC-12 Women’s Championships Day 3 Prelims Notable Scratches

2022 PAC 12 WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Team Scores After Day 2:

  1. Stanford – 648.50 points
  2. USC – 549.50 points
  3. Cal – 486.50 points
  4. UCLA – 354 points
  5. University of Arizona – 342.50 points
  6. University of Utah – 250 points
  7. ASU – 236 points
  8. Washington State – 158 points

The Pac-12 has released the heat sheet for the Friday morning prelims session, which includes some notable scratches.

Calypso Sheridan of USC has scratched the 100 butterfly where she was the #2 seed, and the 100 backstroke where she was the #3 seed, in favor of the 400 IM where she’s seeded 3rd.

Also scratching the 100 backstroke is Cal’s Tea Laughlin, who was the #14 seed. Laughlin will not have any events this morning, but may appear on Cal’s 400 medley relay tonight.

Taylor Ruck of Stanford has scratched the 200 freestyle where she was seeded #4. She will instead swim the 100 back where she’s the #7 seed. Her teammate Brooke Forde has also scratched the 200 freestyle where she was the #21 seed, but was a Tokyo Olympian in this event. Forde will compete in the 400 IM where she is the two-time reigning Pac-12 champion and #1 seed. Also scratching the 200 freestyle is Lindsay Looney of Arizona State, who was the #12 seed. Looney will compete in the 400 IM where she’s seeded with a “no time.” Looney’s best time in the event is 4:11.27 from 2018, which would seed her #6 on the psych sheet.

Isabelle Odgers of USC has scratched the 400 IM where she was seeded #5. She will swim the 100 breaststroke where she’s seeded #4. Also scratching the 400 IM is Nicole Pavlopoulou of USC, who was seeded #13. Instead, she will opt to swim the 100 breaststroke where she’s the #6 seed.

How does what is happening in the PAC-12 conference have anything to do with a showdown with someone in a completely different conference?

For swimmers good at lots of events, the two often have nothing to do with each other.

Lia is the queen of USA swimming.

So I was confused with Brooke Forde being in support of Lia Smith competing at NCAA’s, now I see she dropped the 2 free for the 4 IM. lol that explains it

That makes no sense. Brooke is a national contender in the 500, which is the same with Lia. Educate yourself please.

She swam 200IM yesterday instead of the 500. Just sayin’

And there was an article earlier that specified that Brooke Forde almost never swims the same events in conference and NCAAs. What she is swimming now has no bearing on what she swims at NCAAs, necessarily.

Not to mention, what someone swims often has to do with what is needed for their team. (See Missy Franklin’s event schedule at NCAAs.) If she’s more needed in the 200 IM than the 500 (whether it’s conference or NCAAs), then that’s likely what she’d swim.

Clearly, you haven’t realized that a lot of swimmers are switching out some of their better events to swim other events at conference champs. Trying to imply she doesn’t want to race Lia when she is ranked 21st in the conference in the 200 free makes zero sense. She’s not a national contender in that event.

Suspect she is going to swim 200 free and 200 IM next month. She came back for a 5th year post Olympics well if it was me I’d want a little bit easier schedule for my last year.

Is Lia swimming at this meet? Did I miss a transfer?

Or are you assuming that Brooke will swim the same races at Pac12s as NCAAs? Which she has not done literally a single time in her collegiate career?

I reiterate: wow is it getting old for people who don’t give 2 s***s about women’s swimming thinking they have insight into women’s swimming. If you actually cared, you would have known the above, because it was in a ss article the other day.

She can, and probably will, swim different events at NCAAs than she does at conference, exactly like she’s done the previous years. What does what she swims at conference have to do with Lia Thomas (not Smith), who swims in an entirely different conference?

Forde is a national champion in the 4 IM and has been under 4 mins in the event. Not surprised she is swimming it. She will also most likely swim the 500 free at NCAA’s but just swimming a different event to help her 4IM

To all those that responded, I am aware that conference event lineups have no impact on NCAA event lineups. I just wanted to see how many heated replies I’d get.

I feel like Taylor Ruck is more suited for backstroke at the moment. Amazing athlete, excited to see her swim

2FR/1BK double at NCAAs. Getting fresh 100 BK time now without 200 FR beforehand
