Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mia Chang from Mill Creek, Washington has announced her verbal commitment to the University of California, Los Angeles for 2021-22.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of California Los Angeles! Thank you to everyone who has supported me! GO BRUINS”

A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Chang is a junior at Mill Creek’s Jackson High School. She won both the 200 IM (1:59.71) and 100 back (54.54) this season at the WIAA Girls 4A State Championships. She also led off the runner-up 200 free relay (23.77) and contributed a leg (51.32) to the 3rd-place 400 free relay. Her exploits led to her being named 2019 4A Girls High School Swimmer of the Year.

In club swimming, Chang represents Bellevue Club Swim Team. She is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 back (1:02.42) and has Summer Juniors (or faster) cuts in the 100 free, 200 back, 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 fly, and 200 IM. She competed at 2019 Winter Juniors West in the 50 free, 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM and came in 10th in the 200 back. A week later she won the 200 breast, was runner-up in the 100/200 back and 200 IM, and took 3rd in the 100 breast at Pacific Northwest Swimming LSC Senior Short Course Championships. Last summer, Chang finaled in the 100 back (29th) at Phillips 66 Nationals. She also finaled in the 100 back (15th) and 200 IM (20th) at Speedo Junior Nationals.

Top SCY times:

  • 200 back – 1:56.74
  • 100 back – 54.54
  • 50 back – 25.79
  • 200 IM – 1:59.71

Chang is part of the first full recruiting class for rookie head coach Jordan Wolfrum. Also verbally committed to the Bruins’ class of 2025 are Ana Jih-Schiff, Ashley Stenstrom, Eva Carlson, Gizem Guvenc, Kathryn Lundh, Morgan Hawes, and Paige MacEachern.

Wolfrum’s first year in Westwood ended in a 4th-place team finish at 2020 Pac-12 Women’s Championships, UCLA’s best showing in 6 years. Chang would have been on the B/C final bubble in the 100/200 back at the conference meet. Freshman Sophia Kosturos was UCLA’s top scorer in both events. Chang would have joined freshman Gabby Dang (Chang’s former teammate at Bellevue Club) and sophomore Abriana Howard in the C final of the 100 back.
