Olympic Champion David Popovici Expected At U23 Championships

2025 U23 CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • June 26th – June 28th
  • Samorin, Slovakia
  • LCM (50m)

The second edition of the U23 Championships is on the books for June in Slovakia and the competition has already attracted the attendance of Romanian powerhouse David Popovici.

Speaking to the press this week, 20-year-old Olympic champion Popovici stated, “Even after becoming an Olympic champion, my goals haven’t changed.

“I just want to swim comfortably and as fast as I can, exceeding my limits.”

Popovici’s participation in this lower-tier competition is on par with how he raced at the 2024 European Championships and the 2022 European Junior Championships before that, despite having been ranked one of the top freestylers in the world.

At the 2024 Olympic Games, Popovici brought home gold in the men’s 200m free and bronze in the 100m free, establishing himself as one of the premier swimmers on the planet.

Popovici has not raced since Paris, upping the ante in terms of what spectators hope to see in Slovakia.

The freestyle ace was named 2024 Romanian Male Athlete of the Year after which he said, “Winning is great, but every time I lose I learn a lot. It’s like in life—you can’t always win, and I won’t always win either! But I want to be an example and inspire more young people to take up sports and swimming.” (ProTV.ro)
