Olivia Carter Splits 1:45 on 800 Free Relay at Cary Sectionals

2018 Cary (NC) Sectional Championships

Day 1 of the 2018 Cary, North Carolina Sectional Championships was a distance day, featuring the 2nd-longest individual event of the meet, the 1000 free, and the longest relay of the meet, the 800 free relay, both in a timed-finals session.

17-year old Thomas Bretzmann of the North Carolina Aquatic Club kicked off the day with a 6-second time drop in the 1000 free to finish in 9:05.53. The UNC commit now ranks 5th nationally this season among 17-and-unders in this event.

The women’s race went to Asheville’s Abby Kriegler, who swam 10:00.91. Primarily a distance freestyler, she also holds the top seed in the 1650 free later in the meet. Elizabeth Byrne from Chattahoochee Gold took 2nd in 10:03.80 and Cara Bognar from Team Greenville in South Carolina took 3rd in 10:05.47.

Day 1 Relay Winners:

  • Enfinity Aquatic Club won the boys’ 800 free relay in 6:43.02, including a 1:36.61 3rd-leg from 16-year old Preston Forst. The full team included Tucker BurhansThomas Hamlet, Forst, and Maxwell Edwards. The North Carolina Aquatic Club took 2nd in 6:49.69, including a 1:41.33 from Bretzmann in his second swim of the day.
  • The North Carolina Aquatic Club won the girls’ 800 free rely in 7:25.19 with the team of Sophia PerezGillian ManningAnneliese Merry, and Sydney Morgan combining for the win. Perez had low-split honors for their relay, leading off in 1:49.42. The Enfinity Aquatic Club took 2nd in 7:32.40, including a 1:45.75 from Olivia Carter, the 2017 Swammy Award winner for 17-18 swimmer of the year.
