Olivia Carter Breaks Jasmine Tosky’s Junior National Meet Record in the 200 Fly

2017 U.S. JUNIOR NATIONALS

Olivia Carter of Enfinity Aquatic Club in Winston Salem, North Carolina, stunned the crowd by upsetting the top seed and setting a new meet record in the opening event –the girls 200 fly– at 2017 Speedo Junior National Championships. Carter came into the meet seeded second by 3.5 seconds behind Austin Swim Club’s Dakota Luther. Luther had been 2:08.71 at World Championship Trials at the end of June, edging Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson by 4/100 and earning a spot on the United States World Championship Team.

Luther put up the top time of 2:11.40 in prelims, while Carter qualified third for finals in 2:13.50 behind #2 Lindsay Looney of Metroplex Aquatics (2:12.59).

In the A final, Luther took it out quickly, hitting the 50 wall in 29.1 and the 100 in 1:01.6, exactly how she split her 2:08.7 at Trials. But she didn’t have the octane in the tank that she’d had in June. Carter, running third behind Luther and Looney (1:02.0) at the 100, owned the next 50 meters. She cracked a 32.8, a full second faster than Looney and 4/10 better than Luther. Carter turned in second at the 150 wall, only 3/10 behind Luther.

The final 50 meters was a sight to behold. Not only did Carter surge past Luther, but Looney did, too. The pair finished 1-2 and both stopped the clock under the meet record (2:09.28) set by Jasmine Tosky of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics in 2010.
