Old Dominon Picks Up Florida HS State Finalist Drew Vanden Heuvel (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Drew Vanden Heuvel has announced his commitment to swim and study at Old Dominion University this upcoming fall. Vanden Heuvel is from Sarasota, Florida, where he attends Sarasota High School.

I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Old Dominion University. It has been my goal to compete at the Division 1 level and I want to thank my Family, Coaches, and Friends for making this possible. Go Monarchs🦁!”

Vanden Heuvel, who swims for the Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team, specializes in mid-distance freestyle and IM events. He capped off his long course season last summer at the Futures Championships in Cary, where he earned his highest finish in the 400m IM at 32nd (4:41.92).

This fall, he raced at the Florida High School State Championships (4A), where he advanced to finals in both of his individual events. He recorded a personal best time of 1:54.44 to take 8th in the 200 IM, and swam a 4:43.32 to finish 12th in the 500. His high school team also ended up clinching the 4A team title for the 2nd year in a row.

Most recently, Vanden Heuvel competed at the Florida Senior Championships in March. His meet was highlighted by his performance in the 400 IM, where he dropped over three seconds to post a 4:01.26 in prelims.

Top SCY Times:

  • 200 free – 1:44.35
  • 500 free – 4:41.21
  • 200 IM – 1:54.44
  • 400 IM – 4:01.26

Old Dominion University is located in Norfolk, Virginia, and competes as an NCAA Division I mid-major program in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA). This year, the men finished 3rd out of 5 teams at the CCSA Championships. Their highest individual finisher was Noah Wilkins, who was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:36.31).

Vanden Heuvel’s highest scoring potential looks to be the 400 IM, where his current personal best time would have finished near the top of the B-final at this year’s conference meet. Senior Jacob Cobb was the top finisher for Old Dominion at 8th (3:58.22), while senior Hugo Eriksson was next best at 16th (4:09.75). Vanden Heuvel’s arrival is timely, as both Cobb and Eriksson won’t be on campus next season.

Vanden Heuvel joins Zachary Redding, Xander Schreck, Zach Clowers, Ethan Reiser, and Marcus Schwartz in Old Dominion’s incoming class of 2027.
