Ohio State Winning Big Through Day One of Triangle

The number 10 Ohio State men and number 15 Ohio State women were down right dominant Friday night. Both the men and women are winning big over Princeton and division III Denison through day one of the two day triangle.

The Ohio State Men lead Denison 155-31, and Princeton 133-53.

The Buckeye Women lead Denison 155-30, and Princeton 144-42.

Women:

Ohio State was in complete control the women’s side. The Buckeyes did not lose a single event all night, and completed sweeps in four events.

The Buckeyes Started off with a one two finish in the 200 freestyle relay and didn’t look back. The team of Zhesi Li, Annie Jongekrijg, Rachael Dzierzak, and Macie McNichols touched the wall just under two seconds ahead of their teammates on the B relay, finishing in 1:32.61. Li had the fastest split on the relay, from the lead off, with a 22.75.

Ohio State then swept the mile with a 16:32.96 from Lindsey Clary, a 16:58.04 from Alex Wittman, and a 17:10.55 from Kelly Paige.

The trio of Aliena Schmidtke in 1:50.75,  Annie Gillig in 1:51.21, and Kaitlyn Ferrara in 1:51.32 swept the 200 free for the Buckeyes. Princeton’s Alisabeth Marsteller was a close fourth in 1:51.73.

Ohio State’s third consecutive sweep came in the 100 back.Camey Rabold touched first in 56.00, Zulal Zeren was seconded in 56.51, and Erin Dunseith was third in 56.52.

The fourth Buckeye sweep came in the next event, the 100 breast. The Buckeye trio of Ashley Vance, Taylor Vargo, and Maren Reeder, were first, second, and third in 1:03.53,1:04.33, and 1:04.70, respectively.

Princeton ended the Buckeye run of sweeps with a second place effort from Nikki Larson in the 200 fly. Larson came in at 2:01.59. Ohio State’s Amy Bopp won in 1:59.73.

As fast as Li was leading off the free relay, she was even better in the open 50 free, setting her season best time with a 22.67 for the Buckeyes, good for a tie for fifth in the nation with Stanford’s Maddy Schaefer. Larson finished second again for Princeton, touching the wall in 23.41. Jongekrijg was third for Ohio State in 23.57.

Vance doubled up for the Buckeyes with her victory in the 200 200 IM, touching first in 2:03.13.  Bopp was second for the Buckeyes in 2:04.32. Marsteller was third for Princeton in 2:05.54.

The final event of the evening, the 400 medley relay was won by Ohio State’s Camey Rabold, Ashley Vance, Aliena Schmidtke, and Zhesi Li in 3:45.91.

Men

Princeton did manage to win an event against the Buckeyes in the men’s half of the meet.

In the final individual event of the evening, the 200 IM, Teo D’Alessandro cruised to an easy victory over Ohio State’s Dmitri Dolgov. D’Alessandro finished in 1:48.85, well ahead of Dolgov’s 1:51.02. Corey Okubo was third for Princeton in 1:51.27.

The rest of the meet however, was dominated by Ohio State.

The Buckeye team of Josh Fleagle, Michael Disalle, Matt McHugh, and Steffen Hillmer won the 200 free relay to kick things off for the men in 1:21.15. Princeton’s A relay, comprised of Harrison Wagner, Connor Maher, Julian Mackrel, and Ben Schafer, took second in 1:21.47.

The Ohio State men, like the women, swept the mile. Brayden Seal took first in 15:39.31. Jovan Mitrovic was 10 seconds behind in 15:49.99, and Rowan Williams rounded out the top three in 15:56.50.

Unlike the women, however, the Buckeye men did not sweep four straight events. Fleagle did win the 200 freestyle, in 1:37.44, and Hillmer was second in 1:38.24, but Princeton’s D’Alessandro did not allow Ohio State a chance for a sweep, finishing third in 1:38.81.

The Buckeyes almost completed another sweep in the 100 back, but Princeton played the role of spoiler for the second straight event. Steven Zimmerman finished in 48.75 for the Buckeyes, and McHugh finished in 49.24. Princeton’s Michael Strand was third in 49.65. Connor McDonald was fourth for the Buckeyes in 50.43.

DJ MacDonald won the 100 breast in 55.21 for the Buckeyes, Byron Sanborn was second for Princeton in 55.92. Dolgov was third for the Buckeyes in 56.07.

Freshman Ching Lim of Ohio State won the 200 fly in 1:46.75, good for the ninth best time in the nation so far. Princeton’s Okubo was second in 1:49.10, while Tamas Gercsak was third for the Buckeyes in 1:49.10.

Fleagle got his second win of the night for Ohio State with a 20.22 in the 50 freestyle, but Princeton showed some sprint depth, taking second, third and fourth. Harrison Wagner was second in 20.64, Julian Mackrel was fourth in 20.91, and Ben Schafer was fifth in 20.99. Denison’s Conrad Wuorinen touched fifth in 21.22.

The Buckeyes won the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay, with a dominant performance from Steven Zimmerman, DJ MacDonald, Matt McHugh, and Steffen Hillmer. The foursome won the relay in 3:17.21 almost four seconds ahead of the Ohio State B relay.
