MILITARY APPRECIATION
With Veteran’s Day being this Friday, Nov. 11 Ohio State has brought in retired Major General Bill Matz to talk with its student-athletes about leadership. Prior to Friday’s meet, we will be recognizing Maj.-Gen. Matz for everything he has done for our country.
Maj.-Gen. Matz is a highly decorated combat veteran of the United States Army with a distinguished military career spanning five decades. As an infantryman, he served in Korea, Panama and as a company commander with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam (where he was wounded in action in the 1968 TET offensive). He commanded units in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and was Executive Secretary to two Secretaries of Defense. He also served two years with the Navy/Marine Corps amphibious forces in the Pacific during his second tour in Vietnam.
In 2005, President Bush appointed Maj.-Gen. Matz to the Veterans’ Disability Benefits Commission and he served until the commission rendered its report to the Congress in 2008. He is also past President of the National Association for Uniformed Services (NAUS), a national veteran’s organization which advocates in Congress for service members, veterans and their families.
Head coach Bill Wadley coached Billy Matz- Matz’s son- while stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY as a member of the U.S. Army. Will Matz, a freshman swimmer at Ohio State, is the grandson of Matz.

Three swimmers were named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSwimming.com: Matt McHugh (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly), Liz Li (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), and Lindsey Clary (1650 freestyle, 400 IM).
The three Ohio State stalwarts had incredible success in those events last year; Clary, Li, and McHugh won Big Ten titles in each of these events last season and they were All-Americans in five of them.
2016 Fall Invitational
Ohio State’s Fall Invite is coming up fast! Nov. 18-20 the Buckeyes will be hosting some of the best teams in the country for a great weekend of swimming and diving. More information about the Fall Invite can be found here.
B1G/USA Swimming Set to Face Off
Seven swimmers and one coach from Ohio State’s men’s and women’s swimming programs will represent the Big Ten Conference at next month’s inaugural USA College Challenge, presented by arena.
Lindsey Clary, Liz Li, and Taylor Vargo are representing the Buckeyes from the women’s side, while Josh Fleagle, Ching Lim, Matt McHugh, and Thomas Trace will be there from the men’s side. Ohio State’s Bill Wadley will serve as an assistant coach for the Big Ten men’s squad during this event as well. The seven swimmers give OSU the third-highest total of any Big Ten school in the competition.
The event will take place on Nov. 12-13 at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis. It will pit members of the USA Swimming National Team against the best swimmers the Big Ten has to offer.
Bucks On Us!
Did you know that Ohio State fans can enjoy over 20 sports for free? And even better, did you know that swimming and diving are among them?
There is no cost of admission for any regular season meet, meaning that you can enjoy all the Buckeyes’ home events and watch as some of the best student-athletes in the Big Ten for free!
From our official release: In order to celebrate Ohio State’s free admission sports, the Department of Athletics is officially launching the “Bucks On Us” campaign. Of the Buckeyes’ 36 varsity sports, over 20 do not charge admission to regular season home events. Those sports are: cross country, fencing, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s gymnastics, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, pistol, rifle, rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, synchronized swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, track and field and men’s volleyball. (Note: NCAA/Big Ten Tournament contests may have an admission cost but all of these sports’ regular season home events are free to fans.).
So come on out to the pool all season long and cheer on your Buckeyes!
Why does OSU have such a soft schedule??? Seems they don’t race many top D1 teams at all. Is it because they just want a winning season???
