Ohio high school division II state record holder Trevor Lake gave his verbal commitment to swim for the University of Wisconsin Badgers in Madison, Wisconsin for the 2015-2016 college season.
Lake will bring sprinting prowess to the school which already has a steady basis of swimmers posting solid times in the sprint freestyles. Lake currently holds a 20.86 personal best in the 50 yard freestyle and a 45.21 in the 100, which is the high school state record that he holds.
In the long course pool, Lake swims a 23.37 in the 50 free and a 51.93 in the 100. He’s just a tad slower than what would be needed to give him a position on the Wisconsin relays, but with some steady improvement it’s a very achievable mark for him. Brett Pinfold who’s going into his Sophomore year anchored the medley relays at the BIG10 championships last season, coming home in 19.83 in the 200 and 43.44 in the 400.
The 4×100 freestyle relay has swimmers swimming consistent 43’s all around. If Lake can drop some time, he’ll be a serious contender to be in the mix for a relay position. He has the greatest chance, however, competing on the 4×50 freestyle relay where the slowest swimmer on the Wisconsin squad dropped a 20.26 with a relay start at the BIG10 Championships. With a personal best of 20.86, mix in probable improvement and a relay start and Lake could have a position on the team.
Improvement is almost warranted for this swimmer as his swimming background is very unique compared to other college recruits. Lake currently has only one year of year-round training under his belt, and will be entering his collegiate career with only two complete years of training (this season included).
Lake swam a little bit in grade seven and eight, and swam only during the winter for his freshman and sophomore years at Bay Village high school. During the rest of the season he was involved with other sports, with the likes of football and lacrosse.
Following the winter of this season, Lake made the decision to swim year-round, giving him his first chance at a summer long course meet. Lake showed significant time drops in his long course events and gained some valuable experience.
This season, he’ll be training through and preparing himself, no doubt, for college swimming come the fall of 2015.
“I chose Wisconsin because I don’t think I could find a better group of kids on another team. I just felt at home there. Madison was beautiful and I see myself continuing to improve and make a difference there, and I’m really excited for it,” Lake said via email.
OMG how wonderful. But really how can a “LAKE” not be spectacular when splashing around in water
Trevor – all us “drips” are so proud of you!!!
