PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Ohio swimming and diving team (4-2, 1-2 MAC) secured another two wins for the season, defeating Duquesne 137-124 and Xavier 169-90 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at Towers Pool.
“I’m so proud of the way that our girls handled the weekend,” said first year head coach Mason Norman. “We were able to build today on great performances yesterday. We faced two very good teams today and our girls raced hard and are working together as a team. Lexie White, Kendra Sheehan and Athena really stepped up today. Everyone contributed points yesterday and today for three team wins.”
The meet started with the one-meter and three-meter diving events where the Ohio divers, redshirt junior Olivia Dillon (Newcastle, Aus.), senior Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) and freshman Taylor Miller (Latrobe, Pa.), clenched the top three scores in both events.
In the one-meter, Dillon scored 284.63 points for a first-place finish, Hughes scored 259.65 points for a second-place finish and Miller scored 257.93 points for a third-place finish.
In the three-meter, Hughes scored 245.70 points for a first-place finish, Miller scored 245.63 points for a second-place finish and Dillon scored 244.80 points for a third-place finish.
“Our divers stepped up again and provided us with a great start this morning,” said Norman.
The swim portion of the meet began with the 200-yard medley relay where the Bobcats top team registered a third-place finish with a time of 1:48.79. The team comprised of freshman Athena Aravantinou (North Bethesda, Md.), redshirt junior Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), senior Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.), and senior Lexie White (Waxhaw, N.C.) as the anchor.
The second event of the swim portion was the 1000-yard freestyle where Ohio registered first and second place finishes by sophomores Katherine Garrity (Eagan, Minn.) and Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.). Garrity, with a time of 10:28.16, clenched first-place while Henderson clenched second-place with a time of 10:30.79. The 200-yard freestyle event followed where sophomore Hannah Schlegel (Birdsboro, Pa.) placed fifth with a time of 1:56.81 and junior Mackenzie Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio) placed sixth with a time of 1:57.32. Senior Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) placed eighth with a time of 1:59.54 while junior Katherine Redden (Fort Thomas, Ky.) placed tenth with a time of 2:07.14 for Ohio.
Next, in the 100-yard backstroke event, Aravantinou registered a second-place finish with a time of 58.52. Freshman Kendra Sheehan (Columbus, Ohio) finished fifth with a time of 1:00.47, freshman Madeline Kenyon (Dayton, Ohio) finished ninth with a time of 1:02.50 and sophomore Katelyn O’Brien (Williams Bay, Wis.) finished 12th with a time of 1:04.56 for the Bobcats.
Lahtinen finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.84 followed closely behind by junior Courtney Perrett (Durban, South Africa) who finished third with a time of 1:06.79 and freshman Kelsey Morgan (Pickerington, Ohio) who finished fourth with a time of 1:07.37.
Ohio went on to win the next three events beginning with sophomore Samantha Glass (Villa Hills, Ky.) who clenched her second 200-yard butterfly victory of the weekend with a race time of 2:06.42 Senior Maddie Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) clenched third for the Bobcats with a time of 2:09.69.
Van Lanen registered the next two race wins for Ohio coming out on top in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 24.06 and the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 52.44. In the 50-yard freestyle, White registered a sixth-place finish with a time of 25.09 while senior Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.) registered a 10th finish with a time of 25.35. In the 100-yard freestyle, Perrett clenched fourth with a time of 54.08, White clenched fifth with a time of 54.49 and sophomore Carolyn Bischoff (New Hudson, Mich.) clenched 11th with a time of 58.71.
Aravantinou captured a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time 2:06.89 while Glass captured a third-place finish and Kenyon captured an eighth-place finish with times of 2:07.76 and 213.45 respectively. In the 200-yard breaststroke event, Morgan captured a first-place finish with a time of 2:20.54. Hornstra clenched third, freshman Rebekah Klem (Columbiana, Ohio) clenched sixth, and O’Brien clenched ninth with times of 2:24.34, 2:27.66, and 2:33.30 respectively.
The 500-yard freestyle event resulted in a first-place finish for Schlegel with a time of 5:02.15, a time that was seven seconds faster than all other swimmers in the pool. Henderson registered a third-place finish with a time of 5:02.98 while Caruthers finished fourth with a time of 5:12.02 and Redden finished 11th with a time of 5:32.48 for the Bobcats.
Sheehan registered a second-place finish for Ohio in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.89 while Glass added a fourth-place finish, Davis added a ninth-place finish and Wyke added a 10th place finish with race times of 59.51, 1:00.84 and 1:00.86 respectively.
The 200-yard IM event followed resulting in a second-place finish for Lahtinen with a time of 2:09.41, a fifth-place finish for senior Emily Ortner (Concord, Calif.) with a time of 2:10.89, an 11th place finish for Klem with a time of 2:20.35 and a 12th place finish for O’Brien with a time of 2:20.55.
The meet concluded with a race win for the Bobcats in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:35.05. The victorious Ohio relay team consisted of Perrett, Garrity, White and Van Lanen as the anchor
The final box score was Ohio – 169, Xavier- 90 and Ohio – 137, Duquesne – 124.

Ohio will return home to face Youngstown State next Saturday, Jan. 26 in its senior day dual. The meet will begin at 11:30 a.m. and graduating seniors, Emily Davis, Ana Henderson, Mackenzie Hornstra, Nicole Hughes, Emily Ortner, Corrin Van Lanen, Lexie White, and Maddie Wyke will be recognized.

PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne swimming and diving team split a pair of duals on Saturday in the Dukes’ 2019 home finale, as DU topped Xavier by a score of 159-100 and the Dukes fell by a score of 137-124. The Bobcats also bested the Musketeers 169-90 on the day.
Seniors Kirsten Hillsley (Port Matilda, Pa. / State College), Sydnee Karam (Nazareth, Pa. / Bethlehem Catholic), Kristen McKnight (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton), Morgan Smith (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill), Abigail Stauffer (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg), Emily Thirion (Warren, Ohio / Warren) and Gabrielle Werner (Livingston, N.J. / Livingston) were recognized prior to Saturday’s meet for their contributions to the Duquesne swimming and diving program over the last four seasons. The Duquesne swimming and diving class of 2019 helped the Dukes capture their first Atlantic 10 championship last season, in addition to a pair of two second-place showings in 2016 and ’17.
Emma Brinton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) paced Duquesne with three first-place finishes on the afternoon, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.04), 200-yard backstroke (1:54.04) and the 200-yard IM (2:06.46).
The Dukes finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, as Carson Gross (York, Pa. / York Suburban) placed second (1:54.65) for Duquesne.
DU’s 200-yard medley relay team of Audrey Steen (San Pedro, Calif. / San Pedro), Stauffer, McKnight and Smith kicked off the swimming portion of the meet with a first-place mark of 1:46.57.
Stauffer and Steen each added first-place individual finishes as well, as Stauffer won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.14) and Steen the 100-yard butterfly (58.44).
In addition, McKnight (50-yard freestyle – 24.71) (100-yard butterfly – 58.98), Stauffer (200-yard breaststroke 2:20.94), Gross (500-yard freestyle – 5:09.25), Hillsley (100-yard breaststroke – 1:08.39) and Sophia Perez (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) (200-yard butterfly – 2:07.23) each bested Xavier in their respective events.
Adrienne White (Gibsonia, Pa. / Hampton) paced the Duquesne divers with fourth-place showings in the 1-meter (245.33) and 3-meter (232.20).
Head coach David Sheets: “I was extremely happy with how the team performed today. With it being senior day, it is always a special day. This group has done so much for our program and I am glad their last home meet at Towers went so well. I am excited for how we raced and the upcoming weeks moving towards A-10’s”
Head diving coach Charlie Hauser: “Today everyone made some great progress. We are returning to competitive form after the mid-season break. We need to remain focused on our goals and continue building confidence, but I think we are tracking in the right direction at this stage.”

Duquesne makes the short trek to Trees Pool for the 2019 Western Pennsylvania Invite hosted by Pitt. The divers will compete on Friday, Jan. 25 starting at 1 p.m. followed by swimming on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 12 p.m.

PITTSBURGH – Xavier women’s swimming eight top-three finishes at Towers Pool at Duquesne, but fell to the host Dukes and Ohio on Saturday afternoon. Caroline Gaertner posted the top finish by a Musketeer, winning to 100 back. Emily Conners finished top three in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free.
WOMEN’S NOTABLE
- Ali Fort, Lydia Schaeffer, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Conners led the meet off with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay.
- Katie Kerr led the Musketeers in the distance free events, taking third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:43.09, and taking sixth in the 500 free with a time of 5:14.55.
- Emily Conners led Xavier in three events, starting with the 200 free where she finished third with a time of 1:55.53.
- Caroline Gaertner took first in the 100 back, finishing in a time of 58.48.
- Becca Titterton posted the top time by a Musketeer in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.77.
- Annie Cummins led Xavier in the 200 fly with a time of 2:09.86 to finish fourth.
- Emily Conners led Xavier in the free style sprints, taking third in the 50 free with a time of 24.82 and second in the 100 free with a time of 53.66.
- Caroline Gaertner led Xavier in the 200 back, finishing in 2:08.45 to take fourth.
- Alison Herman‘s time of 2:26.78 in 200 breast led the Musketeers, finishing fourth.
- Lorelei Gaertner‘s time of 59.88 in the 100 fly led Xavier.
- Alison Herman‘s 200 IM time of 2:09.79 was the top time by a Musketeer, finishing third.
- Maureen Cummins, Annie Cummins, Abigail Garner and Caroline Gaertner finished the 400 free relay in a time of 3:38.04 to place second.
- Xavier fell by a score of 169- 90 to Ohio, and 159-100 to Duquesne.
