Novinski Sets Record, Creighton Prep Destroys Nebraska Boys’ HS State

The Creighton Prep boys nabbed a big win this weekend at 2016 Nebraska High School State Championships, scoring nearly 250 team points over second-place Papillion La Vista South.

The sole state record of the meet came from Grand Island’s Matthew Novinski, who took down his own mark in the 100 back, a 49.15 from last year, with a 49.09 in prelims. He came back on Saturday to win the event in 50.14, and he took another gold in the 100 fly in 50.75.

The Creighton Prep 200 medley relay won the championship final by almost four seconds when Caleb Piti, Brian Magee, Colin LaFave, and William Tjaden teamed up for 1:33.59 to second-place Lincoln Southwest’s 1:37.56. Their 200 free relay, Tjaden, LaFave, James Warren, and Brandon Abboud, won by a similar margin, clocking 1:25.56 over Papillion La Vista South’s 1:27.87. The Creighton Prep 400 free relay completed the relay sweep, outswimming Papillion La Vista South again when Abboud, Nick Soltys, Michael Simmons, and Nathaniel Singh finished in 3:11.45.

Creighton Prep’s Abboud, an Xavier commit, picked up a pair of individual wins to complete his clean sweep. Abboud won the 200 free in 1:41.31 and the 500 free in 4:39.77.

His teammate LaFave also picked up an individual win, taking the 50 free in 21.36.

Lance Culjat, a University of Chicago commit from Brownell-Talbot, doubled up on individual titles, winning the 200 IM in 1:52.44 and the 100 breast in 56.64.

Norfolk’s Cameron Carney and Elkhorn’s Mizzou commit William Gottsch also took a win apiece, with Carney winning the 100 free gold in 46.66 and Gottsch winning the one meter gold with 595.90 points.
