CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Tampa Spartans men’s swimming team made program history on Sunday night, claiming their first ever SSC Championship as the Nova Southeastern Sharks women’s team walked away with their fifth-overall win, becoming the outright leader in women’s SSC Championships. Tampa earned both the male and female Swimmer of the Meet awards in Brett Saunders and Courtney Sherwood.
The Spartans posted a score of 952 points, 143 points over second-place Nova Southeastern (809) to win their first-ever championship title. The Spartans and the Sharks sat in the first and second spots throughout the four-day championship, with the remaining seeds remaining the same as well. Florida Southern finished in third for the second-consecutive year with 548 points, followed by Saint Leo (429), Rollins (326.5), Florida Tech (307.5) and Lynn (220).
The Sharks out-scored the Spartans 955-930.5 en route to their fifth SSC Championship title, which no longer ties them with Tampa for total conference championships at four. The Rollins Tars earned the bronze with 438.5 points, followed by Lynn (391), Florida Southern (315), Saint Leo (298) and Florida Tech (268).
Saunders was awarded the title of Male Swimmer of the Meet by winning the 200 IM, 400 IM and the 200 backstroke and finishing third in the 100 breaststroke. The Tampa senior becomes the first Spartan to earn the individual ward in program history.
Tampa sophomore Courtney Sherwood earned the title of the women’s SSC Swimmer-of-the-Meet after collecting earning three gold medals and one silver over the course of the championships. With 77 points, Sherwood tied with Nova Southeastern junior Emma Sundstedt and reigning SSC Female Swimmer of the Meet, who also had three gold medals and one silver, but after calculating tie-breakers, Sherwood was awarded the top honor. This is the first women’s Swimmer of the Meet award for Tampa since Heather Glenday in 2012.
