USA Swimming has unveiled the psych sheets for the 2013 National Championships and World Championship Trials. They can be seen in full here (updated June 21st, 9:45 AM).
(See what changed to the version for the 21st)
Note that there can be changes to this sheet but only based on swims achieving qualifying standards for the first time between now and June 23rd, 2013.
Among the more mysterious event schedules coming into the meet were those of Ryan Lochte, who’s played coy throughout about what he would swim. He has 11 total entries, though there’s no way he swims all of those events, including the 100 free, 200 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM, 50 breast, and the 100 breast.
These entries are by no means binding, as their can certainly be scratches.
Missy Franklin is entered in her four primary events, the 100/200 back and the 100/200 free, and is also entered in the 50 backstroke and the 200 IM. Note that the 200 IM comes on the meet’s final day, after all of her events that matter are done, but she’s entered there rather than the 50 free on that freebie
Dana Vollmer is entered in the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 50 and 100 butterflies; that means after finishing third at Trials in the 200 free last year, and being lighter on training this year, she’s again dropped the 200 free from her schedule.
NCAP 16-year old Katie Ledecky, the defending 800 meter Olympic champion, is really stretching her schedule out this year, as she’s said she wanted to do. She’s entered in the 1500 free, the 800 free, the 400 free, the 200 free, and the real surprise the 100 free. She’s shown she’s got the speed to certainly challenge for a spot in the 200, but can she get low enough in the 100 for maybe a relay swim, at least? If so, she’d be maybe the most impressively versatile distance swimmer we’ve seen on the women’s side in quite a long time, if ever.
Megan Romano, another mystery swimmer, is entered in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, as well as the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes. That means a lot of backstroke races for a swimmer whom many hoped would be focusing on freestyle exclusively this summer, if she sticks to all 6 events.
More analysis of the psych sheets will be up throughout this week before Trials begin next Tuesday.
BK, I too love Ledecky, but don’t overhype her and say she’s the most impressively versatile distance swimmer ever.
That title was locked by Shane Gould, and doubtful any swimmer will be ever match her EVER.
By the way, Gould held WRs in all 100-200-400-800-1,500 free simultaneously, and she won medals in 100-200-400-800 in Munich, and had there been w1,500 she would have won medal in that too as she was the WR holder.
The equivalent of Gould in modern swimming would be if Ranomi Kromowdjojo, Alison Schmitt, and Katie Ledecky are fused into one swimmer.
On the men side… this title (Most versatile free swimmer) would go for Thorpe or is there anyone else?
Sun yang
Thorpe has far stronger claim than Sun Yang.
charles daniels held every WR in 1908 you know
14 year old Matthew Hirschberger is swimming but not newly professional Michael Andrew?!
Michael Andrew is not swimming in the trials??
why??
He does not qualify for the meet i believe. His best event is the 50 free which he goes 23.47 and the qualifying time is a 23.29
Lol
The youngest boy in Indianapolis will be the 14-year-old Matthew Hirschberger.
The oldest men in Indianapolis will be the 32-year-old Anthony Ervin and Randall Bal.
The youngest girls in Indianapolis will be the 13-year-old Isabella Rongione and Cassidy Bayer.
The oldest woman in Indianapolis will be the 35-year-old Erika Erndl.
bobo! Stop stealing my thunder!
Have you ever thought of hiring Bobo? 🙂
No Matt grevers in 200 back?
He knows he has no chance in this race. Smart choice.
Miss Ledecky has nothing to do in the 100 free. She has enough to do with the 200 free, the 400 free, the 800 free and the 1500 free. I’m worried she qualifies on individual in the 200 free. If it was the case I hope she would drop this race from her schedule in Barcelona. 400 free/800 free/1500 free/4X200 free relay is enough! She isn’t Wonder Woman!
Bobo: yes, she is !!
I agree with Bobo, even a youngster who is probably at her distance swimming peak or near it would sell herself short if she swam all those events. The chances of her even being in the top 6 in the 100 are slim and is it worth expending the energy on 2 extra races at the risk of sacrificing a WR in the 800 or 1500? The 200/400/800/1500 is amazing in itself and add on another relay she will have her work cut out for her. I predict you don’t see her swim the 100 at trials.
Again it is the American way and most times we have pretty good results.
Mr Keith about Miss Romano : “That means a lot of backstroke races for a swimmer whom many hoped would be focusing on freestyle exclusively this summer.”
I take that for me and yes, I repeat it’s absolutely stupid for her to continue to train for backstroke, even for the 200 free, and to continue to swim these events while she has no chance and while she uses her energy for nothing. SHE’S A SPRINTER!!!! You don’t see Ranomi Kromowidjojo or Cate Campbell losing their time and their energy on other events! You can’t shine on sprint if you are not focused all year only on that and of course not focused only on that at the big meet.… Read more »
She is the American record holder (SCY) in the 200 free.
As a 200 freestyler I can attest to how different 200 yard and long course meter freestyle is. I think the yards race the first 100 is very important and the meters race the second is more important. The 15 or so fewer seconds and less swimming between (and more) turns allow you to swim at a higher intensity making it much more of a sprint event. A lot of good 200 freestylers in college actually prove to be more 100 freestylers in long course (Dave Walters, Garrett Weber-Gale)
I don’t disagree, but to claim that Romano should stop focusing on the 200 free this season is pretty absurd. She has a lot of potential in the 50 free, but the 200 generally takes the top 6, she is the American record holder in the 200 yard free, and was 17th in the world last year in the 200 free (and 47th in the 50). Why in the world would she give up the 200 this year?
She’s a sprinter and the 200 free in SCY and in LCM are 2 very different things.
This is the way many swim in the US and they have grown up swimming many events all the time where they swam 5 a day as age groupers. Could be why we have versatility and that. “Tude” when it comes to performing. John Nabor won the 1650 SC at a nationals because he didn’t have any other events left on the last day and ha was in the afternoon swims and not the final group. Swimming is swimming and that’s why a Miissey enjoys doubles swims sometimes. In this country it comes with the turf.
Conor Dwyer is listed Una-NBAC. I thought he just went to NBAC for training trip the last month or two. I guess he officially is on NBAC now?
it looks like Bowman might have found a training partner for Agnel. No one else around this fall…could have been tough on Agnel training with little kids every day!
Bowman is also training several Chinese swimmers.
What does unattached-team mean? I thought unattached meant no team, but in watching meets I’ve noted a lot of “unattached representing whatever team” introductions.
Ellen – it usually means a swimmer is switching teams. There’s a mandatory waiting period before a swimmer can change which team he or she officially represents in competition.
Thanks!
Thanks for the explanation
Megan Romano is in the 50 free, she is seeded 7th.
