There are no scratches listed for day 2 finals at the European Championships, but several swimmers were bumped due to the two-per-country limit.
Most notable is world junior record-setting sprint breaststroker Benedetta Pilato, who won’t be able to compete in the 100 breast semifinals despite finishing fourth this morning. Pilato went 1:06.34, but was the third Italian woman inside the meet’s top four. Top qualifier Arianna Castiglioni (1:05.98) and second qualifier Martina Carraro (1:06.26) will advance to tonight’s semifinals.
Italy actually had four women in the top 16, with Lisa Angiolini taking 13th. Pilato and Angiolini are the only two top-16 finishers who won’t be able to move on to tonight’s semifinals.
It’s a similar story in a couple of other events. In the men’s 100 free, Russia had four men in the top 9. Vladislav Grinev (6th) and Andrey Zhilkin (9th) are out of the semis, while Kliment Kolesnikov (1st) and Andrei Minakov (3rd) will advance. Hungary also had three men in the top 16, so Kristof Milak won’t advance.
In the men’s 200 fly, 10th-place qualifier Damian Chrzanowski won’t advance, as Poland had three men in the top 10.
The only semifinal tonight where no country hit the two-per-nation limit was the women’s 50 back.
There were no scratches out of tonight’s scheduled finals: the women’s 800 free, men’s 100 breast, women’s 100 fly, men’s 50 back or women’s 50 free.
