BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 15-ranked Indiana University water polo team fell to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins, 14-10, in a hard-fought game at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 8-12 on the season overall and to 0-8 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play. The Bruins move to 10-2 on the year and to 8-2 in MPSF action.
KEY MOMENTS
- In a tightly-contested first half, UCLA took an 8-7 lead into the break. The two teams almost alternated goals, with Indiana tying the game on six different occasions in the first 16 minutes.
- Junior Tina Doherty led IU with three goals in the first two periods, while both junior Izzy Mandema and sophomore Zoe Crouch had two scores.
- The Hoosiers had a chance to tie the game in the waning second of the first half, but a shot from distance from goalkeeper Mary Askew clanged off the cage.
- In the second half, the Bruins ramped up the defense, limiting IU to just three goals, allowing UCLA to edge ahead and take the game, 14-10.
NOTABLES
- Crouch finished the game with three goals, two assists and a pair of steals, while Doherty ended with three scores and one steal.
- Mandema tallied a pair of goals and steals, while both Kallie White and Lanna Debow each had a score.
- Katherine Hawkins added a game-high three assists, while Askew had three steals and made four saves.
UP NEXT
- The No. 15 Hoosiers will hit the road and head west to face No. 16 San Jose State for a pair of games this weekend. The two squads will play Saturday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET and at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 18.
