Nina Rangelova Becomes First Bulgarian Under 55 Seconds in 100 Free

This morning in the women’s 100 freestyle preliminaries Bulgarian Nina Rangelova broke her own national record in the 100 freestyle, becoming the first Bulgarian woman under 55 seconds in 54.91. That swims breaks her previous record of 55.07 at the 2014 European Championships in Berlin where she eventually placed 8th after posting the record in the prelims.

Rangelova qualifies into the semi-finals in 11th place, while defending Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands put up the top seed in 53.37. Defending champion and Championship record holder Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden qualified 4th in 54.04.

Rangelova is the owner of six Bulgarian national records, with the 50-400 freestyles along with the 5o and 100 butterfly. She is a two-time Olympian, attending both Beijing and London, and has been to the last four Long Course World Championships in Rome, Shanghai, Barcelona, and Kazan.

Her best major international finish to date is her semi-final appearance in the 200 freestyle in Kazan, where she finished 16th.

Rangelova will also compete in the 50 and 200 freestyle events later in the competition.
