New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe hit her second world record of the meet Saturday, taking down the S9 50 free world record at the Singapore stop of the 2019 WPS World Series on an otherwise quiet night. Pascoe broke the S9 100 free world record Friday.
Pascoe, 26, went 27.69 for the gold medal in the multi-class event; the previous record was her own at 28.14. Australian S4 Rachael Watson took second in 39.20, and the United States’ S9 Lizzi Smith went 29.38 for bronze.
Russia’s Valeriia Shabalina (S14) kicked off the night with a win in the 200 free, going 2:05.39. In second was fellow S14 Amisa Kitano (Japan) in 2:17.45, and S14 Sui Kei Cheong (Hong Kong) was third in 2:21.19. On the men’s side, Japan’s Dai Tokairin (S14) won in 1:58.03. Russia’s S4 Roman Zhdanov took second in 2:59.61, and S14 Keichi Nakajima (Japan) was third in 01:58.83.
United States veteran Jessica Long (S8) picked up a commanding win in the 400 free, going 4:55.53. In second was S9 Meimei White (USA) in 4:59.28, and in third, Russia’s Mariia Pavlova in 5:24.21. Japan’s Uchu Tomita (S11) won the men’s race in 04:36.49. Taking second was Ernie Gawilan (S7), of the Philippines, in 4:53.36; in third was Russia’s S6 Andrei Granichka in 05:12.58.
In the final race of the day, the men’s 50 free, S13 Islam Aslanov (UZB) took gold in 23.67. His teammate and fellow S13 Muzaffar Tursunkhujaev was second in 24.22, and rounding out the podium was Japan’s S9 Takuro Yamada in 26.45.
