New York Athletic Club Wins 2017 Collegiate Cup

The 2017 Collegiate Cup ended in thrilling fashion earlier today at Fresno State as the New York Athletic Club took first place with an 8-7 shootout win over Stanford. California claimed third place with a 7-5 victory over USC. For complete results from the Collegiate Cup, click here.

In the title match the New York Athletic Club jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second quarter behind three goals from Jamie Neushul. Stanford rallied to get back into the match and tied the game up in the fourth quarter on an Aria Fischer goal with 1:41 to play in the match. Final attempts at the goal faltered on both sides leading to the shootout.

Stanford took the early lead in the shootout after Makenzie Fischer converted. The Cardinal would be stopped on their next three attempts as Ashleigh Johnson came up big in net for New York. Neushul and Colleen O’Donnell connected for New York to give NYAC a one goal lead. Shannon Cleary scored for Stanford to even the score in the fifth round but the Cardinal would need a stop to prolong the game. New York turned to Stephania Haralabidis who scored giving New York the one goal victory. Johnson and Gabby Stone combined to finish with eight saves for New York while Julia Herman posted six saves for the Cardinal.

In the third place game the Cal Bears jumped out to a 3-1 lead on two goals from Clair Sonne. They would build the lead to four by intermission going ahead 4-2. They would expand the lead to 6-2 after three quarters as Carla Carrega would score twice. USC battled back scoring three of the next four goals to close within two at 7-5 with 1:26 to play in the game. They would get no closer in the match and fall by the same two goal margin. Annika Jensen and Brianna Daboub scored twice each in the loss.

As for the rest of the standings, the UCLA Bruins took fifth place with a 10-9 win over China while seventh place saw Pacific edge Hawaii in a shootout 11-10. In ninth place USA 1 slid past Michigan 8-5 with San Jose State defeating host Fresno State 9-5 for 11th place. UC Irvine edged USA 2 by a 6-5 score to claim 13th place and rounding things out was Marist defeating Pomona-Pitzer 11-8 for 15th place.

On Saturday, Fresno State picked up their first pre-season win in program history with a 9-8 win over USA 2. The Bulldogs start their first varsity season on January 20 in Santa Barbara, CA.
