SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Nevada swimming and diving team remained unbeaten on the season, defeating San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at the SJSU Aquatics Center. The Wolf Pack won by a 173-120 margin and improved its dual record to 8-0.

The host Spartans (6-3) won the meet’s first two events, but Nevada (8-0) then won eight of the next nine events to take a wide lead. The Wolf Pack won 10 of the first 14 events before exhibitioning its swimmers in the final two events. Nevada also grabbed two of the top three places on the podium in 13 of the meet’s first 14 events.

Nevada was led by its divers, who combined to win 31 of a possible 38 points in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with victories from freshman Sharea Zheng and senior Krysta Palmer. In the pool, Nevada was led by juniors Teresa Baerens and Sita Kusserow and sophomore Jaeger Turner, who each won two events.

“We had to battle some conditions being on the road with rainy conditions at an outdoor pool, but I was proud of our performance,” said head coach Neil Harper. “I thought our divers really stepped up today and provided us with confidence and a cushion on the scoreboard.”

Two-time All-Mountain West selection Teresa Baerens won the 200-freestyle in 1:50.87 and the 100-freestyle in 51.44 to lead Nevada. The Ottobrun, Germany native is now a combined 9-0 in the 100 and 200 free in duals this season.

Jaeger Turner also shined for the Pack with victories in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. The Wigan, England native won the 200 in 2:04.08 and the 100 in 56.32, marking her second and third event titles of the season.

The Wolf Pack also received event wins from junior Arantxa Medina-Alegria, who won the 100-yard breaststroke in the 1:05.47, and from senior Yawen Li, who won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18.73. Nevada’s top swimming events came in the 200 back and 200 breast, as Nevada swept the podium with 1-2-3 finishes.

Nevada’s diving team dominated, scoring 31 points compared to San Jose State’s seven. Newcomer Sharae Zheng won the 1-meter dive with a score of 360.45 – the second-ranked dive in the Mountain West this season. Palmer, the reigning MW Diver of the Year, won the 3-meter dive with a score of 281.01 – the top dive in the conference this season – and finished runner up with 323.83 points in the 1-meter dive. The Pack swept the podium in the 1-meter dive and had three of the top four finishes in the 3-meter dive.

Nevada returns to action next with its final regular season competition of the year on Saturday, Jan. 30 in a tri-meet with UNLV and Wyoming. Action will begin at noon PT in the Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas.

“This is the time of season where we are still training very hard work and preparation for the Mountain West Championships,” said Harper. “We’ll turn our focus to UNLV and Wyoming next, and then we’ll start to rest and focus solely in conference after that.”
