NATIONAL CLUB SWIMMING ASSOCIATION JUNIOR NATIONALS
ORLANDO, Florida – Spring championships are here. And with it, comes the NCSA Spring Championship meet held this year from March 17-21 in Orlando, Florida.
Last night in session one we saw the Nation’s Capital men and the Aquajets women dominant the field – with multiple national age group records falling.

Session Two (the first day of prelims) will feature (both men’s and women’s) 200 back, 100 free/500 free, 100 breast, 200 fly, and 800 free relay. Check down below for a live recap of each event.

Women’s 200 Backstroke
Lucie Nordmann – a 14 year old from the Woodlands – had a huge drop in her 2-back this morning, going from a 1:59 seed time to a first place 1:55.59. Nordmann was the only one under 1:56, yet Carrie Boone (Nation’s Capital) and Sophie Skinner (Northern KY) came in close behind at 1:56.31 and 1:56.74, respectively.

Men’s 200 Backstroke
Although he wasn’t even seeded in the top three, first place finish in this morning prelims goes out to John Shebat of Nation’s Capital Swim Club. Shebat touched out first seeded Michael Taylor (Dynamo), 1:42.27 to 1:42.55. Third place goes to third seeded Brennan Balogh (Lincoln Select) with a time of 1:43.55.

Women’s 100 Free
Stanzi Moseley – a 16 year old from Roadrunner Aquatics – shaved some time off her first-seed entry to earn herself the first place prelims spot with a time of :48.14. Second and third places go to Katherine Drabot (Ozaukee) and Caroline McTaggart (All Start Aquatics) with times of :48.96 and :49.27, respectively.

Men’s 500 Free
Another record has fallen! Matthew Hirshberger – the 16 year old from Nation’s Capital who’s killing this meet – just swam a 4:16.43, breaking the old 15-16 record of 4:16.59! Hirschberger won the 500 by almost six seconds. Second place went to James Murphy (Machine Aquatics) with a time of 4:22.30 and third place went to Gavin Springer (Nation’s Capital) with a time of 4:22.61.

Women’s 100 Breast
Alexis Wenger with a NAG record! Wenger dropped almost 3/4 of a second to win the prelims of the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.02. Rachel Munson of Shorewood Swim Club took second with a 1:01.12.

Men’s 100 Breast
Andrew Seliskar (Nation’s Capital) was just :00.02 seconds off of the NAG record for the 100 breast! Seliskar swam a :51.78, earning him the top seed going into the finals. In second and third seeds come Carsten Vissering (Nation’s Capital) and Ian Finnerty (Counsilman Cente) with times of :52.44 and :54.02, respectively.

Seliskar’s at it again! Andrew Seliskar – who holds the NAG record in the 2-fly – swam just over his record time this morning to finish first by over two seconds at a 1:42.00. In second place, came Zach Harting (Huntsville) and in third, came Fred Schubert (Nova).

Women’s 800 Free Relay
The Aquajets swam to a nearly-unrivaled, three second finish in the 8-free relay. Their relay consisted of Kaia Grobe, Carly Quast, Courtney Evensen, and Zoe Avestruz and finished at a 7:15.80. Poseidon and Ozaukee took second and third places, respectively.

Up until two weeks ago, I thought for sure that Seliskar would be swimming the 400 IM on Day Two for the duration of his NCAA career, but man, 100 breast has got to be tempting as well. Especially next year, with Prenot still around to swim the 400 IM and no Cal Bear who appears to be a lock for the A-final of the 100 breast once Katis gone. The real question in, will Seliskar be able to get his sprint free low enough to help out in one of those relays as well
In my opinion – it shouldn’t be expected of him. His future is in IM’s, 200Fly, maybe 200Free. Cal’s recruiting classes are insane – it would be better if they developed the sprinters they have/will get. Lynch for example, or even better Kyle Gornay (who was 43.9 in 100free in hs). It is puzzling to me, why Cal’s freestylers were so mediocre this season (excluding Messerschmidt and Stubblefield).
It’s worth noting that of the guys in their freshmen class who haven’t developed (Gornay, Silverthorn, Kao, Coan, and then maybe Campbell in the sophomore class as well) they all more or less peaked as juniors in high school, and either got slower, stagnated, or only improved minimally as seniors for whatever reason. They were also the California high school swimmers of the group, which is just an odd coincidence. Training at Cal certainly hasn’t led to improvement, but they already weren’t on a great curve. As far as Burns goes, maybe he just doesn’t respond well to anything besides super high volume Mission Viejo training.
Season isn’t over with yet!
It’s over for all those guys mentioned, wrt NCAA’s that is! Agree with Reid, appears that none of the Cal freshman swimmers coming from California high schools developed this year.
Yeah, his breaststroke is just terrible, definitely shouldn’t swim that… O.o

I am so proud of you LANE 0! I hope you enjoy living in my basement, surfing the internet all day/night long in your dirty underwear. You must be a wonderful coach to make such a meaningful observation. Perhaps all the other swimmers at the meet would benefit from hearing more from you… or maybe NOT.
Maybe if you swam a 1:42 200 back, you wouldn’t be called Lane 0….
John scratched from tonight’s 200 BK finals as he has been fighting off pneumonia since the weekend. Megan Burns and a couple of other swimmers are also struggling with the same bug. Hopefully things will get better for them soom.
Haha! Prelims will be much more interesting than finals at this meet. At least in terms of times.
Thanks livestream, I definitely wanted to watch girls jumping into the pool for warmup rather than witness Seliskar’s 51.7. I mean who turns on a livestream hoping to watch the girls racing anyways? If I wanted to see some marginally okay swimming, I’d attend my local high school or summer league meets. #rantover
