2014 NCAA qualifier Victor Goicoechea will transfer to the University of Wisconsin this fall, the program announced on Thursday.
Goicochea swam his freshman and sophomore seasons at the University of Hawaii, which included a berth at the NCAA Championships in his inaugural campaign in 2014.
The Spaniard had one huge meet, the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, in his two years at Hawaii. He hasn’t matched those times in yards since, and in the case of the 1650 free has been off by a wide margin, leaving his best times at:
- 200 free – 1:36.07
- 500 free – 4:16.67
- 1650 free – 14:52.10
His time in the 1650 free ranked him 15th in the NCAA that season, but hasn’t been closer than 12 seconds to that time since – shifting his best swims more toward the 200/500 than the 500/1650.
At Wisconsin, he’ll join for one year senior-to-be Matthew Hutchins, a native New Zealander, who ranked among the country’s top 10 across the whole season with a 4:13 in the 500 free and a 14:33.09 in the 1650 free – both times of which came at the NCAA Championships.
Goicoechea sat out the 2015-2016 NCAA season, and was far from his best long course times at the Spanish Championships (6 seconds in the 400 free, for example).
Goicoechea has represented Spain internationally at many meets, including the 2011 World Junior Championships, the 2012 European Junior Championships, and the 2013 European Short Course Championships.

This is crazy the recruiting class coach Whitney Hite is brining in, especially when I’ve heard rumors he’s making a big push for FSU
Let’s see: He’s had a huge breakthrough recruiting year at Wisconsin, just had his contract extended through 2018-2019, and Wisconsin’s finally building a top-notch, on-campus aquatics center that’s supposed to open in 2019. Doesn’t sound like someone who’s looking to trade Madison for Tallahassee, of all places.
So agree with this. Way better situation where he is at now. FSU fans are dreaming if they think they could get Hite. The only job that I could ever see Hite going to outside of Wisconsin is Texas. Wisconsin is a great place to be right now.

Wisconsin is heating up big time on both the men’s and the women’s side. #4 women’s recruiting class for the upcoming year (as ranked by swim swam). Some stellar boys coming in as well, I’d bet they have a top 10 recruiting class on the men’s side as well.
