The NCAA has released the men’s preselection entry list.
See the full preselection lists here.
(Updated 6:16PM Eastern Time – Most notable changes: Dartmouth’s Nejc Zupan reseeded in 200 IM; Cal’s Jamey Lyon scratched.)
Expect for a full, cut entry list to be revealed on Wednesday afternoon.
Among the more notable entries:
- Florida’s Sebastien Rousseau is swimming the 500 free, the 400 IM, and the 200 fly. That 500 free is probably a little bit of a surprise for the first day as compared to the 200 IM. He ranks 10th in the country in the 200 IM, which he swam at SEC’s, but only 17th in the 500 free, which he didn’t.
- His teammate Marcin Cieslak is swimming the 100 fly, the 200 fly, and the 200 IM. That is the expected lineup for him, as opposed to trying the 200 free on day 2, which he has done in the past.
- Cal’s Tom Shields is taking on the 100 fly/100 back double, plus the 200 fly on Saturday. That’s the same as he did last year.
- Auburn’s Marcelo Chierighini is swimming the 100 fly on day 2 of the meet, in addition to the 50 and 100 frees in which he’s a national title contender.
- USC’s Vlad Morozov will swim the same individual lineup as he did at Pac-12’s: the 50 free, the 100 breast, and the 100 free. He was an Olympian in the 100 back, though all indicators were that this 100 breast was coming on the meet’s second day.
- Texas’ Dax Hill, after trying some different things at Big 12’s, is back to his familiar 50/200/100 free lineup for NCAA’s.
- The NCAA apparently didn’t accept Fabio Gimondi’s 100 free from the Georgia Tech last chance meet, despite accepting other swims from that meet. We have confirmed that this has to do with Gimondi swimming two Last Chance meets.
- Notre Dame’s Frank Dyer has switched his 50 free from Big Easts, done for team purposes, back to the 100 free for NCAA’s.
JEANTUEHL:
Your comment that “Cal got smoked” in the 400F relay tells me you were not aware that Cal had the meet won unless they were disqualified in the last event relay. They made sure to not commit a mistake and swam safely. Surely, with all your aquatics knowledge, you get that. I think Cal did the same in a previous year so not to lose the title to Texas in the finals.
M_FAN … Michigan did NOT fully taper for Big Tens. Did you pay attention to our 2nd’s and 3rd’s that won those events last year? Not fully tapered. Went for the points not the win. You will see faster times out of these guys at NC’s.
Based on the updated pre-cut sheet (Zupan’s 200 IM and no Jamey Lyon in the 1650) the Texas sprinters are out…

You wouldn’t be using good judgement if you underestimate Cal and Durden. They have outperformed every other team at the biggest meet of the year for 3 straight years (yes, even when they were 2nd in 2010). Yes, they have some slight holes. But to assume Michigan is going to put it together at NC’s (when Bottom has clearly never done this) is silly. Until Cal flops at the meet, I wouldn’t bet against them.
Yes, Cal will be a lot faster… and they are probably the favorite for this meet (given they are the defending champs). Michigan usually swims about the same speed that they do at their conference. But this is a completely different Michigan team from years past. They are faster from top to bottom. I wouldn’t under estimate Michigan. This is going to be a battle for first.
Unfortunately I agree with COACH. As an IU guy, it will be sickening to have Michigan win this thing. Cal has made a couple miscalculations in this new NCAA format. Gimondi is now a relay only swimmer on top of their best sprinter Messerschmitt being ineligible all together. Fleming and Stubblefield luckily sneak in with a couple saves at PAC 12 in the dicey 50 or they would have been relay-only as well.
If the NCAA title comes down to the last 400 free relay, forget about it. Michigan wins. Utah just smoked Cal in that relay, and speaking of Tom Shields, that Utah lead-off swimmer is from Shields hometown. The vibes don’t look good for Cal IMO. Go IU… Read more »
They could have cared less about the 400 FR at Pac-12’s. just trying to put the finishing touches on a historic win. Still, I think it’s a lot asking Pebley, Prenot, Tarczinski, and Hoyt all to have amazing meets at the same time ….
Speaking of IU, I see them in the top 7, especially if Wells and Schmuhl brig their A game
Cal didn’t fully taper all their swimmers for PAC12s. Michigan did for Big 10s (except some of their distance guys). Cal will be a lot faster at NCAAs… the question is if they will be as fast as Michigan once fully rested and if Michigan will swim as fast as they did at Big 10s.
Somebody try to convince me that Michigan won’t win this thing. I’m not seeing anybody that can step up and beat them. Lots of depth AND quality. I’m a huge Durden fan but even he can’t pull this off, although me tommy shields will be the swimmer of the meet.
Remember when nobody picked Cal to finish higher than 4th last year before NCAAs?
Gimondi swam in two last chance meets. The first one was just before the start of Pac-12s in Federal Way. Then he went to the one in Georgia. I believe NCAA rules state that you are only allowed to go to one (or at least only able to count times from the first one).
dranms – everyone believes that to be true…but nobody has been able to find it in a current rulebook yet.
There is a rule about only swimming each event once at an invitational meet (non-championship meet), but without full results from Georgia Tech meet, it’s hard to guess whether that rule was violated.
Karma has a way of coming back around to haunt you, particularly when you do something that you know is just plain wrong – Cal most certainly has positioned themselves to get smacked with just that.
Fabio’s the victim of an esoteric/obscure rule. Please enlighten us all on the myriad ways Durden and/or Cal are dirty? Sincere thanks.
Any news on the situation with Fabio Gimondi? Is he in?
