Murphy, Fink, Weitzeil, Ledecky Named Team USA Captains For Paris Olympics

Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Abbey Weitzeil, and Katie Ledecky have been named the captains of Team USA for swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The announcement comes about 10 days after training camp began in North Carolina.

The group are some of the oldest swimmers on the team. Fink is the oldest member of either roster while Murphy is the 4th oldest on the roster. Weitzeil and Ledecky are two out of the four 27-year old women.

Murphy, Fink, and Weitzeil all were captains at last summer’s 2023 LCM World Championships in Fukuoka. Paris marks the first nod for Ledecky as a captain. Murphy also returns as a captain after serving as one of four captains at the 2020(1) Tokyo Olympics.

Murphy will look to stand on the podium in the backstrokes once again after a silver medal in the 200 and bronze in the 100 at the Tokyo Games. The Paris Games are his 3rd Olympics.

Fink enters the meet as a key member of the American breaststroke group. Paris marks his 2nd Olympic Games.

Weitzeil earned the nod after earning a spot on the women’s roster as a member of the 4×100 freestyle relay. She also qualified for the 2016 and 2020(1) Olympics.

Ledecky will look to continue her dominance in the distance freestyle events and is competing in her 4th Olympics.

The team just arrived in Croatia for training camp after finishing up in North Carolina. Swimming competition begins on July 27th in Paris.

AW barely made team. Surprised she got nod over Simone and LK. Guess those two don’t have the best team support

Would love to see a “C” on their swim caps, like football and hockey captains get on their jersey.

Can someone explain what their role as a captain is? I doubt it would add more work that could significantly impact their own performances?

Some responsibilities but not inclusive:

1. Represent the athletes as needed.
2. Athlete liaison to coaching staff.
3. Involvement in athlete welfare issues and code violations.
4. Daily uniforming decisions.
5. Athlete meeting agenda and conduct.
6. Meal and social function decisions as applicable.
7. Rooming assignments.
8. Nomination of leadership representation including opening ceremony flag bearer.

I’m all for anti Russia agenda, but at least spare the innocent athletes who don’t support the war and have no influence on the decisions their dictator makes

Murphy’s rhetoric against Russian swimmers (especially when they happen to be his biggest competition) is not exactly captain material

Dressel should’ve been captain. Or even Blake P (not Kalisz lol)

This is the right choice – these swimmers have always been leaders and the whole team surely looks up to them

I don’t think there’s any reason to believe that he will repeat that, although I do understand why he wasn’t chosen.
