Mount St. Mary’s Combines For 24 Event Wins In Sweep of Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. (October 21st, 2023) – Mount St. Mary’s traveled to northern Pennsylvania this weekend to compete against Messiah in an afternoon dual meet. The Mountaineers had the ideal day with monstrous wins as the men’s team won 208-49, while the women’s team won 182-77. Between the men and the women, the Mount totaled 24 event wins.

The women’s team started cleanly with the 200-yard medley relay as Hanna Aggen, Christine Lazari, Abigail Steckiel, and Maddy Samuels won the event with a finals time of 1:48.63. After their start the women went on to win nine additional events with notable wins in the 1650-yard free and the 200 butterfly. Maddy Samuels claimed consecutive first place finishes in the 50 (24.59) and 100 (55.66) freestyle events, while also contributing to the women’s relay first place finishes.

The men’s team started the day with a dominant win in the 200-medley relay as Jason FitchAidan GradyJacob Wallace, and Austin Toland added the first eight points of the day finishing with a time of 1:35.35. The men went on to go undefeated, winning 14 total events. Notable wins include the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard butterfly as freshmen Antonio Gurri and John Haskins claimed their first individual wins as a Mountaineer. Gurri won the 200 IM with a finals time of 2:04.44, while Haskins won the 100 fly with a finals time of 54.86.

Grantham, Pa. – The Messiah University women’s swim team opened the 2023-24 with a double-dual meet against Wilkes University and Mount St. Mary’s. The Falcons dominated the Colonels 210-28. The Falcons fell to The Mount 182-77. Evangeline Soerens and Samantha Pennell collected wins in the 200-breast and the 1650-free, respectively, to lead Messiah swimmers.

Up next, the Falcons head to Hood College for a triple-dual meet against MAC rivals, Widener University, Hood College, and King’s College (Pa.).

The Falcons opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay. The team of Grace SchadAbigail SoerensCaitlin Ross, and Sophie Schulze finished with a time of 1:53.44.

The Falcons started the individual races strong with a dominating first-place finish in the 1650 free from Samantha Pennell with a time of 19:29.03.

The Falcons continued the strong start with a second and third place finish in the 200-free from Sophie Schulze and Lauren Mock, respectively. Schultze finished with a time of 2:06.12 and Mock touched the wall with a time of 2:06.63. Mock added a second-place finish in the 100-free with a time of 57.96. Schulze also added a third-place finish in the 500-free with a time of 5:40.43.

Evangeline Soerens was one of the top racers for the Falcons on the day. Soerens earned the second first-place finish of the day for the Falcons in the 200-breast with a time of 2:26.51. Soerens also added a silver medal in the 100-breast with a time of 1:08.14.

Grace Schad also had an impressive day with a second-place finish in the 100-back (1:01.36) and a bronze medal in the 200-back (2:17.16).

Erin Goudie added a third-place finish in the 200-fly with a time of 2:16.54.

The Falcons finished the day off with the 200-free relay. The team of Sophie SchulzeAbigail SoerensLauren Mock, and Caitlin Ross finished with a time of 1:45.30.

Up next, the Falcons head to Hood College for a triple-dual meet against MAC rivals, Widener University, Hood College, and King’s College (Pa.).
