The 2014 short course meters Salnikov Cup, featuring for the first time a prize pool of over 4 million Rubles ($67,500), began on Friday with top men’s swim coming from a big domestic star, Vlad Morozov, while the stars of the women’s side came from the internationals instead.
On the men’s side, the top swim of the morning was a Morozov 50.77 in the 100 IM that breaks the Russian Record in the event, clearing his 50.81 from Doha. The old record before Short Course Worlds was a 50.95 done by Sergey Fesikov in 2009 in a suit when Fesikov was sprinting as well in SCM as anyone had to that point.
This is also the fourth-best performance in history, just missing Markus Deibler’s 50.66 World Record set at the World Short Course Championships two weeks ago. Morozov took silver to Deibler’s World Record at that meet.
On the women’s side, a Dutch contingent performed very well, including a 1:52.64 in the 200 free from Femke Heemskerk, a 23.83 in the 50 free from Ranomi Kromowidjojo, and a 56.72 100 fly from Inge Dekker.
All three of those were winners aside from Dekker’s 100 fly – there, she came in 2nd to Katinka Hosszu, who still hasn’t slowed down after a crazy fall and winter of competition. She was a 55.71. This is an event that Hosszu didn’t swim at the World Championships, and that morning swim was a new Hungarian Record for her by half-a-second.
How does Morozov get so high in the water? Even his chest sometimes looks like it is coming out of the water.
4M rubles. If I were any podium finisher, I’d want my reward in euro or dollars or gold or something. 4M rubles won’t buy cheap vodka next week. I hope VM returns to his stable base of training in the USA, and can win some (real) money on the GP circuit or someplace. Heck, he had two meets in OK probably paying more than the money is worth.
You are very ignorant and uninformed. In Russia, the salary of the swimmers more than in US, and the material base better than in the US (regardless of the ruble). And taxes in Russia lower than in the US. By the way, the ruble is growing again
do you have a video?
Nikolay – no video that we’ve found.
Ruble is down at least 50 per cent and falling.
The ruble rate has fallen recently.
I believe we are on Friday today and the finals are at 5 PM in Russia.
Impressive swim for Morozov. But it’s weird he still doesn’t want to swim the 100 free.
I see that Hosszu swims again a PB in her 324th meet of the year. That’s laughable.
The 100 what exactly? not everyone gets the results from Doha..
“….Morozov 50.77 in the 100 that breaks …” – I assume that is the 100 IM?
Jay – correct.
