On day 2 of the 2016 International Vladimir Salnikov Cup, visiting swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands clinched another title, doubling up on her 50m freestyle victory from yesterday. Competing in the 100m distance today in St. Petersburg, ‘Kromo’ notched a speedy 52.59 to score the only sub-53-second time of the field and beat out host country star Veronika Popova. Popova, the 2015 Short Course European Championships bronze medalist in the event, settled for silver tonight with a time of 53.03.
Vladimir Morozov made his one individual event appearance, notching the men’s 50m freestyle victory in a time of 21.05 to win by about 3 tenths over the field. That time beats what the former University of South California swimmer threw down last week for silver in Windsor, a result of 21.14 behind winner Jesse Puts’ 21.10.
Aleksandr Krasnykh found his way on top of the podium again tonight, claiming a 2nd victory in freestyle. As a follow-up to yesterday’s 400m freestyle gold, Krasnykh touched in 1:43.48 to take the gold in the 200m freestyle event tonight, able to out-touch silver medalist Vlacheslav Andrusenko‘s time of 1:43.88.
In his first post-Rio appearance, Belarusian national record holder Yauhen Tsurkin surged to the wall first in the men’s 100m butterfly race. He earned a mark of 50.76, a time that falls within his own top 10 performances of his career. The outing would have finished in 8th place last weekend in the Windsor final.
