Montenegro Stuns Host Budapest in Shootout

Montenegro claimed the victory tonight (Saturday June 23) in Budapest (HUN), where the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League Super Final 2018 was taking place since Monday June 18.

The Balkan team stunned the hosts 13-11 after a penalty shootout in a thrilling final at the brand new state-of-the-art Duna Arena, a venue that was built for the 17th FINA World Championships last summer in the Magyar capital.

The score at the end of the game was 9-9 (HUN vs MNE: 2-2, 4-2, 2-3, 1-2) but Montenegro outscored the Hungarians 4-2 during the penalty shootout to claim the Super Final crown.

In the bronze medal match, Spain crushed Japan 12-7, with a dominant last quarter (4-2, 3-3, 1-2, 4-0).

World champions Croatia ended up winning 10-8 the 5th medal game against Australia (3-2, 2-2, 4-3, 1-1).

The United States of America beat Kazakhstan 9-3 with a leading start (4-0, 01, 3-1, 2-1).
