The men and women from MIT remain in first place after day 2 of the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT’s Zesiger Sports & Fitness Center in Cambridge, MA.

The same winning foursome in last night’s 400 medley relay from MIT; Christy Rogers (JR), Kristen Finney (FR), Katie Siegal (FR) and Anna Kokensparger (SR) just missed the NCAA A cut in the 200 yard medley relay by .29 seconds with a new NEWMAC meet record and winning time of 1:43.89.  The previous record was a 1:44.75 by MIT from 2012.  Springfield College was second (1:47.36) and Wellesley College third (1:47.85).

MIT was missing from the finals of the 200 medley relay for a disqualification.  The Springfield team of Travis Morse (SR), Michael Normoyle (FR), Nolan Manley (SR) and Jason Scotto (JR) fought hard for from WPI with a winning 1:34.00 to 1:34.85.  Wheaton (MA) was third in 1:36.98.

The second event of the evening saw a couple of records go down as MIT continued to dominate.  In the women’s 400 IM race, Cathleen Pruden, the freshman from Mount Holyoke who was second in last night’s 500 freestyle broke the NEWMAC meet record in a very fast 4:28.92.  Former event record holder Katelyn Rossick (JR) from MIT was second in 4:32.36.  Coast Guard junior Chantel Ferguson was third in 4:34.05.  All three swimmers met the NCAA B qualifying standard.

NEWMAC record holder from MIT, Brendan Deveney was absent from the 400 IM which opened the doors for MIT freshman Alexander Lednev to sweep in and grab the top spot with a record swimming 3:58.17.  Junior Remy Mock was second in 4:04.36 and Babson freshman An Truong was third in 4:05.78.  All three times met the NCAA B qualifying standard.

In the women’s 100 butterfly MIT freshman Katie Siegel broke her teammates NEWMAC record with a swift NCAA A cut time of 55.56.  Wellesley freshman Dorothy Ren claimed the second spot in an NCAA B cut time of 56.61 and the freshman from MIT, Danielle Garside was third in 57.78.

MIT grabbed the top five spots in the men’s 100 butterly.  Senior Wyatt Ubellacker grabbed his second individual win of the weekend in stunning fashion with a 49.21.  His prelim swim of 48.86 was an NCAA A cut time and a NEWMAC meet record.  Sophomore Ben Bauchwitz was second with an NCAA B cut time of 50.10 and freshman Sean Corcoran was third in 51.04/49.95p.

The women’s 200 freestyle saw an event switch from former NEWMAC record holder Anna Kokensparger as she chose not to swim the 100 fly, an event she has owned since her freshman year.  The choice was a good one as she broke the NEWMAC record in a winning time of 1:51.30.  Springfield freshman Callie Phillips claimed the second spot with an NCAA B cut time of 1:53.17.  MIT freshman Kate Yu, winner of the 500 freestyle grabbed the third spot with a 1:54.30 (1:53.21p).

Brenden Deveney won his second event of the weekend in stunning fashion with a blazing fast 1:39.87 in the men’s 200 freestyle.  MIT senior Tony Chen was second in 1:41.10 and Springfield sophomore Jason Scotto was third in 1:41.32.  All three swims met the NCAA B qualifying standard.

MIT next won the 100 breaststroke as freshman Kristen Finney dropped an NCAA B cut time of 1:05.62, narrowly touching out Springfield junior Nicolle Stracqualursi, 1:05.92.  WPI sophomore Nysa Casha was third in 1:06.72.

The only event MIT didn’t win this evening was the men’s 100 breaststroke as Springfield freshman Michael Normoyle won in 56.47.  MIT sophomore Ben Bauchwitz was second in 57.27 (57.24p) and MIT freshman Dion Low was third in 57.74.  Last year’s champion in the event from MIT, Michael Liao finished in fifth place with a 57.91.

MIT took the top three spots in the 100 backstroke.  Reigning event champion Christy Rogers (JR) nabbed the top spot with a respectable 57.01, freshman Danielle Garside was second with a 57.55 and Katie Siegel (winner of the 100 fly) was third in 58.23.

Another NEWMAC meet record fell in the men’s 100 backstroke as MIT freshman Bo Mattix claimed the top spot with a blazing fast 50.40.  MIT senior Ron Rosenberg was second in 51.37 and the freshman from WPI, Alex Powers finished third in 51.57.  All three swims met the NCAA B qualifying standard.

Senior star Anna Kokensparger was back in action in the final event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay as she lead the team from MIT to their 6th win of the night.  Incidentally, this was also Anna’s 5th win in as many events.  She was joined by Joanna Yeh (JR), Emmie Ryan (SO), and Kate Yu (FR) as they beat the team from Springfield College by 3-seconds (7:36.80/7:39.33).  Both swims were NCAA B qualifying times.  Wellesley College finished third in 7:54.89.

MIT won the final event of the evening, the men’s 800 freestyle relay.  The team of Brendan Deveney (SR), Langston Fitts (FR), Remy Mock (JR) and Daryl Neubeiser (FR) won the event in 6:48.84.  Springfield College was second in 6:52.13 and Coast Guard was third in 7:00.81.
