Missouri State Travels To Carbondale For Two-Day Dual With SIU

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State swimming and diving teams travel to Carbondale Ill., this weekend for a two-day dual against SIU.  

Meet Details

  • The meet will consist of session one starting on Friday at 4 p.m. While session two will start on Saturday at 10 a.m.
  • Live results can be found on the Meet Mobile app which is downloadable through the app store.
  • The meet will be streamed on the SIU Facebook page.
  • Diving events will be separate due to limited pool deck space.
  • The diving events will start at 5:45 Friday and 12:45 Saturday.

Women’s Bear Bites 

  • After claiming the 2020 Missouri Valley Conference championship title in February, the MSU women’s swimming and diving team was unanimously selected as MVC favorites in the preseason poll, collecting all eight first-place votes.
  • Last week at Mizzou, the senior duo of Libby Howell and Anna Miller continued their dominance as both set new school records. Howell swam a 1:46.51 in the 200 free for her school record while Miller swam a 48.95 100 free for hers.
  • At Mizzou, the 200-backstroke featured two lifetime bests for the women as Kellie Fischer swam a 2:02.05 and Ainsley Krug posted a 2:03.61.
  • Krug then followed up her performance in the 200-backstroke with another lifetime best in the 400 IM (4:34.78).
  • During the Bears 155-70 (Women Only) win over Little Rock on Feb. 13, MSU swept six events and recorded 11 individual wins while setting four Hammons Student Center pool records.
  • Anna Miller highlighted the meet as she won both the 50 freestyle (22.85) and 100 freestyle (49.68) in pool record times. In addition to being pool records, both times were MVC bests this season. (Feb. 13)
  • MSU went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle as Grace Beahan posting a career-best 1:52.01 to win the event. Following Beahan was Anna Lucas (1:52.65) in second and Sami Roemer (1:55.92) in third. (Feb. 13)
  • Yuliya Zubina broke the pool record in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event in 1:02.43. MSU secured the sweep as Alessia Puleo (1:04.58) and Cabrini Johnson (1:05.73) finished second and third, respectively. (Feb. 13)
  • Sydney Radloff was victorious in the 200 backstroke as the sophomore bested the field by an impressive 12 seconds with a time of 2:01.49. (Feb. 13)
  • Madison Brown made the most out of her last meet inside the Hammons Student Center on Feb. 13, as the senior won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.60.
  • Against Little Rock seniors Ashley Yarbrough and Dayana Popa went 1-2 on both boards. In 1-meter diving Yarbrough posted a 281.63 while Popa posted a 267.30. On 3-meter boards Yarbrough had an impressive 299.48 mark and Popa earned a zone cut after scoring a 282.30
  • Three-time All-MVC honoree Libby Howell highlights the returners after winning three individual events at last year’s championship. Howell also played a part in capturing a duo of relay titles.
  • Three-time All-MVC honoree Anna Miller, garnered wins in three individual events and two relays at last year’s conference championship.
  • The Bears return another individual title winner in Alessia Puleo, who won the MVC 200-yard Breaststroke in 2020.
  • Howell holds school records in the 200 free, 1000 free and 1650 free.
  • All MVC returnees include Grace BeahanMadison BrownKellie FischerSam Hietpas, Howell, Miller, Dayana Popa, Puelo, Sydney RadloffAlex Thorson and Ashley Yarbrough.

Men’s Bear Bites 

  • The men’s squad is also is coming off a MAC Championship in 2020.
  • Last week at Mizzou Michael Hampel turned in impressive performances in both the 100 breaststroke (55.02) and the 200 breaststroke (2:00.88).
  • Freshman Dylan Moffatt posted his second lifetime best this season in the 1650 free, swimming a 15:08.07.
  • Pawel Krawczyk was dominant in his individual performances at Mizzou swimming a 4:23.95 in the 500 free and a 1:46.56 in the 200 butterfly.
  • Freshman Robert Hill has made an immediate impact. The Kansas City product swam the 14th-fastest time in the country at 48.08 in the 100-backstroke in his first-ever collegiate meet against Missouri back on Nov. 7.
  • As a result of his efforts, Hill was named MAC Swimmer of the Week (Nov. 11).
  • Freshman Dylan Moffatt had an outstanding performance at SMU taking first in both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyles. In the 1000 free, Moffatt dominated the field, swimming a personal best of 9:08.53 to win the event by 18 seconds.
  • In diving action at SMU, John David Spence and Michael Claunch and each recorded a pair of top-three finishes. Claunch took second on the 1-meter boards (285.53) and third on the 3-meter boards (283.80). While, Spence took second on the 3-meter boards (305.03) and third on the 1-meter boards (262.20)
  • Moffatt’s time of 4:26.48 in the 500 free was also his collegiate-best. (Jan. 30)
  • Moffatt preceded that performance by swimming a 15:16.47 1650 at Notre Dame which is the 25th best mark among all collegiate swimmers this year. (Jan. 22)
  • Tyler Lewis claimed an individual win at SMU in the 200 fly, clocking in with a personal-best mark of 1:50.25. In addition to winning the 200 fly, Lewis also claimed second in the 400 IM (4:03.9). (Jan. 30)
  • At SMU, Hill claimed a victory in the 100 backstroke after swimming a 48.86. Hill was six one-hundredths of a second off his personal best mark which he set back on Nov. 7, at Mizzou. (Jan. 30)
  • Senior Michael Hampel recorded a win at Drury in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.79. (Jan. 16)
  • Hampel posted two top-three performances at Notre Dame, placing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.91) and third in the 100 breaststroke (55.22). (Jan. 22)
  • Hampel was a gold medalist in the 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay at the 2019-20 MAC Championships. He also was a silver medalist in the 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay.
  • As a freshman, Jonathan Hill was part of the 2019-20 MAC gold medalist 800 freestyle relay team and stepped to the podium in the 200, 500 and 1650 free events.
  • All-MAC returnees include Arthur Cury, Claunch, Hampel, Hill, Pawel Krawczyk, Lewis and Sebastian Odent.

Coach Dave Collins 

  • Dave Collins (Drury, 2005) is in his 10th season as Missouri State head coach.
  • Collins garnered Missouri Valley Conference and MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019-20.
  • Under Collins watch, the Bears have won eight MVC conference titles and three MAC championships.
  • Last year, Collins engineered an unforgettable campaign, sweeping the MVC and MAC Championships. Earning their fourth-straight Valley title and 16th overall, the MSU women ran away with the crown after winning seven individual and three relay events to finish with 826.50 points. The MSU men were equally dominant at the MAC Championships, claiming ten conference champion citations throughout the meet. Standout senior Antonio Thomas was recognized as the MAC’s Co-Swimmer of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior. Michael Claunch earned his second trip to the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships to represent the Bears on the 1-and-3 meter boards.
  • As head coach, Collins and the Bears’ staff have produced 36 All-MVC first team selections and 16 All-MAC first teamers. Collins has also coached five conference swimmers of the year, a list that includes Dora Kiss (2016, 12), Lauren Pavel (2015, 17), Renata Sander (2011-14) and Uvis Kalnins (2014). Academically, with team GPAs of 3.0 or higher, both Bear squads have annually earned CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors.
  • Since his arrival at Missouri State, the Bears have broken every men’s and women’s school record in the non-freestyle events.
  • Collins has taken the Bears’ recruiting efforts to new heights. He and his coaching staff are responsible for signing Missouri State’s first top-100 recruit: 2012 Olympian Uvis Kalnins of Latvia. CollegeSwimming.com listed Kalnins as the No. 68 overall swimmer in the 2012 recruiting class.
  • Before becoming head coach, Collins served as an assistant for four seasons at Missouri State under MSU Hall of Famer Jack Steck.

Take a Look Ahead 

  • After the conclusion of the meet against SIU, the Swim Bears will be back in action March 19-20, with the men traveling to Xavier and the women competing at Indiana State. Start time for the events has yet to be announced.
