Minnesota Takes 14 of 16 Events in Decisive Women’s Dual Meet Victory Over Iowa

Minnesota hosted Iowa on Friday evening for a women’s Big Ten dual meet, besting the Hawkeyes in a lopsided 202-79 final score. The Golden Gophers won 14 of 16 events en route to their victory.

In the 200 medley relay, Ava Yablonski, Emma Lezer, Jordan McGinty, and Hannah Cornish teamed up for a 1:41.71 to win. The Golden Gophers also finished second in the event, with their ‘B’ team of Faith Johnson, Molly Urkiel, Megan Van Berkom, and Olivia Bloomer combining for a 1:43.61.

Minnesota was also dominant in the 400 free relay, going 1-2 there as well. The ‘A’ squad of Kate Sullivan (50.72), Yablonski (51.28), Bloomer (51.48), and Cornish (52.55) posted a 3:26.03. Maeve O’Driscoll (53.77), Maggie Summit (51.38), Paula Rodriguez Rivero (51.42), and Jordan McGinty (52.78) swam a 3:29.35 on the ‘B’ team.

In a unique occurrence, the 200 fly field was made up entirely of freshmen. Minnesota’s Grace Drabot won the race in 2:04.52, getting out to a slim early lead and building it slightly through the back half of the race. Fellow first-year Golden Gopher Faith Johnson clocked a 2:05.27 for second place. A pair of Hawkeye freshmen, Olivia Asay and Emily Wooden, came in third and fourth at 2:08.40 and 2:09.58 respectively. Minnesota freshman Summer Schmit took firth with a 2:20.98.

Drabot also won the 500 free, swimming a 5:02.02.

Minnesota freshman Ava Yablonski won the 100 fly in 55.28, getting out to an early lead with a 25.99 on the first 50.

Jordan McGinty led a 1-2-3 charge by Minnesota in the 200 free, winning a very tight race. McGinty got her hand on the wall first in 1:51.28 after pulling away from the field in the middle of the race. Minnesota’s Megan Van Berkom and Maggie Summit tied for second, both touching in 1:51.50. Iowa freshman Sabina Kupcova came in fourth at 1:51.58.

Iowa started out fast, going 1-2 in the 1000 free. Alix O’Brien won the race in 10:18.21, leading teammate Sila Ozkazanc (10:22.24) into the finish. Ozkazanc got out to a big early lead, flipping in 5:04.67 at the 500 turn, but faded on the second half of the race.

The Hawkeyes also grabbed a win in the 100 breast, where Sheridan Schreiber clocked a 1:03.54. Minnesota’s Emma Lezer (1:03.73) got out to a lead of half-a-second on the first 50, by Schreiber ran her down on the back half of the race.
