Minnesota hosted Arizona State to start off the 2013-2014 season. The 13 seniors between the men’s and women’s programs were honored along with their families prior to the start of the meet. The Minnesota Golden Gophers won almost every event en route to beating the Arizona State Sun Devils by a score of 190-95 on the men’s side and 197-94 on the women’s side.
On the men’s side, Minnesota’s Derek Toomey started with a 19.99 to win the 50 free.He also had a second-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 45.16. Carl Newenhouse won the 200 back with a time of 1:48.97 while CJ Smith touched the wall in the 100 free in 9:19.03 which earned him a first-place finish.
Daryl Turner, a freshman, started off with a BANG!!! He won the 100 backstroke with a 48.43 and a 44.65 in the 100 freestyle. He was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Nick Hatanaka, also a freshman, won the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.52.
Arizona States Thibault Capitaine won the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.31. He was the only individual event winner for the Sun Devils.
On the women’s side, Minnesota’s started off with a win from Tess Behrens, Kierra Smith, Rebecca Weiland, and Erin Caflisch in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.95. Behrens also won the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 55.61 and 2:01.23. Kierra Smith doubled up, winning both breaststroke races with a 1:04.71 and in the 100 and a 2:17.40 in the 200 breast.
Breanne Siwicki won the 1000 free in her first meet at a gopher, touching the wall in a time of 10:08.89.
