Mikayla Tan Nails 1:05.28 100-Yard Breast, Fastest Time by U.S. 11-Yr-Old

2021 SN DART Fall Meet

At DART Swimming’s annual Fall Meet in Davis, CA, 11-year-old Mikayla Tan dropped 0.54s from her previous 100 breast best to nail the wall with a new lifetime best of 1:05.28. Tan and two more DART swimmers also had swum under this year’s Futures cuts at this intrasquad meet. You can check out the 2021 Futures cuts here.

Tan’s 100 breast swim of 1:05.28 was under the Futures cut of 1:05.99, coincidentally marking her second swim under 1:06. Her previous best in this event was 1:05.82 from this past summer. Currently, Tan ranks No. 53 all-time among U.S. 11-12 swimmers, but is the fastest time swam by an 11-year-old in the last decade. Tan is one of four swimmers to break 1:06 in the 100-yard breast at age 11.

She is also the 11th-fastest 11-year-old this past decade in the 50 breast at 30.83. This weekend, Tan clocked in 30.90, just 0.07s off her lifetime best. Tan also secured four more individual wins in the girls’ 11-12 age group over the 2-day meet: 200 IM (2:12.12), 100 fly (1:00.43), 200 free (2:00.37), and 100 free (55.37).

All-Time U.S. 11-Year-Old Rankings – Girls 100 BR SCY

  1. Mikayla Tan (1:05.28), 2021*
  2. Alexis Mesina (1:05.71), 2019
  3. Olivia Anderson (1:05.88), 2009
  4. Meghan Lynch (1:05.90), 2014
  5. Sara Lin (1:06.02), 2018

Her 8-year-old brother, Ayden Tan, was a force of nature over the weekend as well, winning 8 events in the boys’ 8&U age group. A. Tan set a lifetime best in the 50 free at 27.53, which ranks No. 18 among U.S. 8&U swimmers this past decade. But that’s not even his highest rank among some of the fastest 8&U swimmers ever.

A. Tan is the fastest U.S. 8&U swimmer all-time in the 50-yard back (30.49), No. 3 in the 100 IM (1:05.65), and No. 4 in the 50 fly (29.80). Keep in mind, however, this is according to the USA Swimming database, meaning there is a high chance there were a number of faster 8&U swimmers who potentially swam summer league only.

Over the weekend, Tan clocked 31.17 in the 50 back, 1:09.16 in the 100 IM, and 30.73 in the 50 fly. More of A. Tan’s event wins include the 50 breast (37.12), 100 free (1:00.77), 25 breast (16.75), and 25 fly (13.78).
