The University of Michigan hosted its men’s Last Chance meet on Sunday in Ann Arbor to give swimmers a final opportunity to improve upon times in their quest in landing a berth in the 2015 NCAA Championships. The reigning 2015 Big Ten Men’s Champions are ranked 5th in the nation as of CSCAA’s last poll in February, therefore, any additional swimmer and/or event included in their repertoire will bring the Michigan men one step closer to a possible run at the national title.
Of the eighteen Wolverines who participated in the Last Chance Meet, two notable swims inched closer to the right side of the cut line for the Championship meet. Junior Pete Brumm’s season-best 100 butterfly time coming into the meet was the 46.53 he earned in prelims at the Big Ten Championship meet, however, he bested that today clocking a swift 46.30 to move up in overall rankings in the event from 39th to 27th. That should be enough to grant him entry into the big show in Iowa at the end of the month, but we will know for sure once the final entry list is determined on Monday, March 9th.
Sophomore Cameron Stitt hacked off an impressive nine seconds from his season-best 1650 freestyle time of 15:12.58 earned at the Big Ten Championships, to clock a new effort of 15:03.83. Stitt’s new time now sits 37th in the NCAA (barring other last chance meets); although a huge time improvement, this sits too far below the anticipated cut line to result in Stitt making the meet.
