Michigan’s Nielsen Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

Michigan’s Anders Lie Nielsen was named the Big Ten swimmer of the week after sweeping a double in their quad meet against Buffalo, Ohio State, and West Virginia. Nielsen won the 200 free (1:35.68) and 500 free (4:24.13) at the meet. Two swimmers were named freshmen of the week, Indiana’s Vini Lanza and Purdue’s Joe Cifelli. Each won an event in their respective dual meets last weekend. Diver of the week went to Ohio State’s Colin Zeng.

Swimmer of the Week

Anders Lie Nielsen, Michigan

Sr. – Farum, Denmark

  • Recorded a trio of first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.68), 500-yard freestyle (4:24.13) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:56.78), and added a third-place touch in the 100-yard freestyle (44.28) against Buffalo, Ohio State and West Virginia
  • Times in all three individual freestyle events are NCAA provisional qualifying marks
  • The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor

Diver of the Week

Colin Zeng, Ohio State 

So. – Fujian, China

  • Tallied a combined three first-place finishes and a second-place finish on the weekend in meets against Buffalo, Kentucky, Michigan and West Virginia
  • Finished first in three-meter diving with a score of 419.30 and second in the platform event with 367.58 points against Kentucky
  • Recorded a pair of wins in the three-meter event with 457.00 points and tower diving with 418.15 points against Buffalo, Michigan and West Virginia
  • Scores in all four events are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks
  • Earns his fourth career Diver of the Week honor

Co-Freshmen of the Week

Vini Lanza, Indiana 

Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil – Colegio Estadual Governador Milton Campos

  • Finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (48.20), second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.95) and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.92) against Louisville
  • Times in the butterfly events are NCAA provisional qualifying marks
  • Earns his first career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Indiana Freshman of the Week: Blake Pieroni (Jan. 20, 2015)

 

Joe Cifelli, Purdue 

Crown Point, Ind. – Marian Catholic

  • Finished first in the three-meter diving event (398.85) and second in the one-meter event (368.55) against Minnesota and Northwestern
  • Finished 35 points ahead of the second-place finisher in three-meter diving
  • Scores in both events are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks
  • Earns his sixth career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Purdue Freshman of the Week: Max Showalter (Jan. 27, 2016)
