Karen Austin of Southfield, MI has announced her decision to continue her academic and athletic careers at the University at Buffalo beginning in the fall of 2022. Austin is a rising senior at Wylie E. Groves High School and she swims year-round at Atlantis Swimming – BBA.
I’m ecstatic to announce my verbal commitment to the University at Buffalo to swim and study neuroscience! I can’t wait to be a part of the Bulls family. Thank you Coach Andy and Coach Bridgette for welcoming me to the team. I am grateful to my parents, teammates, and coaches for the endless hours of support over the past few years, especially this last one. Horns up! 🤘
Austin is a 2021 Michigan High School Girls Division 2 State Championship runner-up. In Michigan, Division 2 accounts for the middle group of schools by enrollment. She swam the 200 IM and the 500 free at the timed finals championships in January. She touched 5th in the 200 IM in a time 2:08.48 and she picked up a silver medal and a best time in the 500 free (4:58.35).
She also competed at the state meet her freshman year, making it back to finals in both the 500 free and the 200 IM. She was 6th in the free and earned a bronze medal in the IM.
Austin has 2021 Futures qualifying times in the 400 meter IM, the 1500 meter free, and the 200 yard IM.

The University at Buffalo’s women’s team was the 2021 Mid-American Conference champion. Antonia Naccarella tied Akron’s Sarah Watson as the high-point scorer. Naccarella won the 50, 100, and 200 free.
Austin will be a member of the Bulls’ class of 2026.
