Michael Phelps On Track To Win His 22nd Career Medal

Michael Phelps won his 5th medal in the 100 meter butterfly, his 21st career Olympic medal. In the men’s 4×100 medley relay tomorrow night, Phelps will surely end his Olympic career with 22 medals in all. Supported by Matt Grevers, gold medalist in the 100 backstroke, Brendan Hansen, bronze medalist in the 100 breaststroke, and Nathan Adrian, gold medalist in the 100 freestyle, Phelps should cruise into the record books once again.

Phelps appeared confused at the finish of the 100 fly final, unsure for several seconds of how to react. His winning time, 51.21, was realatively slow.

South African, Chad le Clos, tied Russia’s Evgeny Korotyshkin for the silver with a 51.44.

Milorad Cavic, the 2008 Olympic Games silver medalist, finished just off the medal podium  in fourth place; however, he was out the fastest, clocking a 23.57 at the 50. The mere fact that Cavic was in the Olympic final is a success, considering his major back surgery.  After Cavic’s 51.45 European Championship win in the 100 fly this spring, Phelps said, “Cavic is back and he’s on my radar. You have to consider him.”

Phelps was 24.35 at the 50, in 7th, only ahead of fellow 200 butterflyer and  gold medalist, le Clos.

I agree that this website has been a lifesaver all week. Earlier in the week, I was able to catch several races on the European feed (thank you again to Philip Johnson and others!!!) plus read so many excellent and insightful comments from swim fans all over the world. I found myself at the pool yesterday with no live stream to watch Ledecky swim but was able to keep refreshing the swimswam page to see the live comments and follow the race as it unfolded. The energy and excitement of this epic swim came thru loud and clear in the comments and I actually preferred ‘watching’ it this way. Thank you so much SwimSwam and to all swimmers and swim… Read more »

My one and only complaint about this site is that many American swimming fans complained about NBC’s live feed and rightfully so. I posted a much better link with superior video and audio that came from Europe and these posts were removed.

I was able to pleasantly watch the entire meet with no audio or video interruptions and I was unable to tell any of the fans on this site about it.

If it was a “pirated feed” then they had to remove it because of liability. I live in Germany, and had no problems watching the LIVE streaming feeds from ZDF. I know its frustrating how NBC chose to broadcast the swimming events, especially after the whole Beijing “Morning Finals” was handled.

For those who do not know, NBC forced the IOC to change the event schedule for swimming in 2008, so that all the finals for each event could be aired in the U.S. during prime time. What should the U.S. swimming community do to show their displeasure with how NBC handle these Olympics?

Thank God for the live feeds. I refused to be forced into waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for swimming events that were held until the last minute AND focused strictly on the American swimmers at about 11:00 at night. The live feed was fair and showed ALL of the competitors. NBC and their so-called “live” programming makes me puke.

Still feel a bit upset for Lochte` s performances ….too much advertisement can`t bring him any good . I love his talent and what he brought to swimming but something is a bit weird in this meet for him so far , I wish for him some lessons learned and new growth .to be followed.
His relay anchor was not bad at all but did not bring gold for Usa`s relay > respect anyway for him .

Huge respect to Olympian M. Phelps for his records breaking and amazing legacy he will leave behind him > i knew team Usa would deliver a fabulous meet and they did with 3 WR`s and huge surprises + confirmations > Missy Franklin had a wonderful meet and Is the Women of these olympics with no doubt . 2 more golds from Usa are still to come …and i predict at least one world record ….Cheers from India

Mel, if you read these comments, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to you and the rest of the staff of SwimSwam.com for all of your hardwork! You really improved my enjoyment of the London experience by providing information about the events as well as a place for me to share my own ideas about the events and enthusiasm for the Olympics with other fans. I must add that the fact that the “streaming” video from NBC was horrible made this website even more of a godsend because I could fill in the blanks of what little I was able to see on NBC with the info. here. If I had to wait for the evening tape-delayed show… Read more »
